Lyon 0-1 Chelsea: Reiten’s wonderful finish means it’s advantage Chelsea ahead of next week’s second leg at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea will take a one-goal lead back to Stamford Bridge after Guro Reiten’s sublime finish secured an impressive win over holders Lyon in the Women’s Champions League quarter-finals.

The eight-time winners Lyon had the better of the early chances but Reiten curled a wonderful shot past Christiane Endler after an excellent pass from Erin Cuthbert. Lauren James came close to doubling Chelsea’s lead with a shot that hit the inside of the post, while Sam Kerr also had an opportunity late on.

Chelsea lost defender Millie Bright to injury near the end of the first half and Lyon came close to equalising after the break when Magdalena Eriksson lost possession inside her own box, but Ann-Katrin Berger was able to tip Delphine Cascarino’s shot onto the post.

54 mins: Morroni sprints into space on the left wing and brings a pacey diagonal pass under control. She whips a decent cross over to the opposite side of the box where Lindsey Horan arrives late and powers a header towards goal.

It’s a decent effort but Magdalena Eriksson is on hand to head the ball clear himself.

Kerr flicks the ball on and tries to spin around Wendie Renard but the Lyon centre-back is too strong and manages to hold the forward up long enough for Christine Endler to come out and collect the ball.

“We need to do better. This is not enough. Second half, we have to do better. Be more intense, keep the ball better – we didn’t have that. And also be more efficient in front of goal.

Surprisingly Chelsea edged possession in the first half having 54% of the ball. They’ll take that across the second half with this one goal lead.

Anything to bring back to England for the second leg will be a massive bonus for Emma Hayes’s team.

Lyon are dangerous though. They’ve created more opportunities but have lack a clinical edge in front of goal.

45+5 mins: So far so good for Chelsea. They’ve edged themselves in front despite Lyon controlling the tempo and most of possession in the first half.

It was a lovely finish from Guro Reiten which has given the Blues a slender lead. An injury to Millie Bright may upset the flow in the second half as Lyon will continue to come at Emma Hayes’ side.
