Fulham had scored 106 goals in 45 games and hammered Luton 7-0 on Monday to secure the Championship title.
But Marco Silva’s side were cut apart by the Blades inside 25 minutes at Bramall Lane.
Morgan Gibbs-White, Iliman Ndiaye and Sander Berge all punished poor Fulham defending and Enda Stevens added another in the second period.
Fifth-placed Sheffield United will play Nottingham Forest in the play-offs, while Luton meet Huddersfield.
Luton sealed sixth place with a 1-0 home victory over Reading, in which Harry Cornick’s winner came in bizarre fashion on the stroke of half-time.
Royals goalkeeper Orjan Nyland rolled the ball out unaware that Cornick was behind him, and the Hatters striker pounced on the loose ball to score.
Middlesbrough’s promotion dream died with a 4-1 defeat at Preston. Follow all the reaction on the final day of the Championship season below:

Huddersfield looking good for third as they go 2-0 up against Bristol City through Danny Ward.
Luton looking in control of the game as we approach the interval, at home to Reading. A draw is perfectly fine for them to be in the play-offs, given Middlesbrough’s final-day dismal showing so far.
Elsewhere:
Stoke City 1-1 Coventry: Equaliser from Sam Clucas for the home side just before the break.
Championship final day latest
Some angry appeals from the Luton fans as Reading’s Holmes brings down his man on the edge of the box and the referee waves penalty appeals away.
As it stands we are now looking at one from Luton or Millwall for the final play-off place - it’s Luton’s to lose, but if they do lose here, Millwall need to win their own match to claim sixth on goal difference.
Elsewhere:
West Brom 2-0 Barnsley: Karlan Grant with a penalty and Adam Reach with the second.
Peterborough 1-0 Blackpool: Jonson Clarke-Harris with the opener there.

GOAL!
Looks like Middlesbrough are resigned to another season of Championship football - they are now 2-0 down to Preston with Daniel Johnson crossing and Dael Fry deflecting in the second just after the half-hour mark.
A couple of goals around the rest of the games to update you on:
Huddersfield are ahead at home to Bristol City thanks to Harry Tofolo, which as it stands sees them jump above Forest into third.
And John Buckley has put Blackburn ahead against Birmingham too.

GOAL!
Might have to reduce the number of Sheffield United updates we focus on at this rate - they are now 3-0 up against Fulham thanks to Sander Berge! No chance the Blades lose their play-off spot now, surely.

GOAL!
Not good news for Boro - Alan Browne has fired in a brilliant volley to put Preston ahead in that game!
That will leave Luton fans rather more happy, given those early missed chances at home to Reading.
AS IT STANDS:

6th Luton, 73

7th Middlesbrough, 70
8th Millwall, 70

Injury issue for Reading as Paul Ince watches on in concerned fashion from the sidelines.
Meanwhile... GOAL!
It’s another one for the Blades and it might be fair to suggest Fulham are taking it easy today after winning the title.
Illiman Ndiaye has the second on 22 minutes, finishing after a Seri slip in midfield is ruthlessly punished.

All looking good for the Blades right now, though Kenny Tete has hammered an effort over the bar in response for Fulham.
It’s a little end-to-end between Preston and Boro too - a goal right now for the away side would put them above Luton on goal difference, remember.
Elsewhere: Coventry lead at Stoke, Gyoekeres with the goal.

GOAL!
Sheffield United are in front against the league champions Fulham!
A huge first strike of the day and it’s a 10th-minute goal for Morgan Gibbs-White.
A cross from the right is nodded in at the near post by the attacking midfielder.
AS IT STANDS:
5th Sheffield United, 75
6th Luton, 73

7th Middlesbrough, 71
8th Millwall, 70

Luton have already spurned two or three really good openings against Reading - an early goal here would surely settle some massive nerves and put them well in the driving seat for a play-off place.
No goals in the second tier anywhere in the 12 games, as we approach the 10-minute mark.
Worth remembering Nottingham Forest and Huddersfield’s results today will also determine the play-off semi-final fixtures.
Championship final day: Kick-off!
Underway at our four focus games! Luton and the Blades have it in their own hands - and a chance inside a minute almost sees Cameron Jerome put Luton ahead!
What a start that would have been.
Table at kick-off:
5th - Sheffield United, 72 pts
6th - Luton, 72
7th - Middlesbrough, 70
8th - Millwall, 69
