Premier League transfer round-up: Tottenham aim for double signing

Follow live updates as Liverpool FC face a trip to Burnley in the Premier League, one of three early kick-offs to be staged this afternoon. The Reds are aiming to keep pace with Manchester City after the Premier League leaders re-established their 12-point lead at the top of the table thanks to a 4-0 win over Norwich on Saturday night. Jurgen Klopp’s side are on a run of three wins in a row in the Premier League, although the Liverpool manager was dismissive of their chances of catching City in the Premier League title race following Thursday’s 2-0 win over Leicester at Anfield.

Diogo Jota continued his goalscoring form on a night which also saw Luis Diaz make his first Premier League start and Mohamed Salah return following Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations defeat to Senegal last weekend. Sadio Mane, who scored the winning penalty in Senegal’s triumph, could return today as Liverpool visit Turf Moor, where they find a Burnley side at the bottom of the table under Sean Dyche. The Clarets are unbeaten in three following the midweek draw with Manchester United, however, but are desperate for a win to boost their survival chances.

Follow live updates from Burnley vs Liverpool below, plus scores from Tottenham vs Wolves and Newcastle vs Aston Villa, in the day’s other early kick-offs:

Fabinho strike enough for Liverpool to see off Burnley

Fabinho’s fifth goal in eight matches helped Liverpool grind out a 1-0 victory over Burnley in testing conditions to maintain their pursuit of Manchester City.

With rain seemingly blowing around Turf Moor in three different directions at the same time, the conditions seemed ideal for an upset – one Jurgen Klopp’s side could ill-afford starting the game 12 points off the leaders.

But even though the visitors reunited their famed original front three of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino for the first time since the end of October, it was their new-found goalscoring midfielder who made the breakthrough.

Wolves punish woeful Tottenham to bolster top four hopes and heap more misery on Antonio Conte

Over at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the rain fell on Antonio Conte during this miserable defeat to Wolves, as two thoughts would have drifted across the Italian’s mind.

One, which is a not a new realisation, is the scale of the task he faces to turn Tottenham into a side that looks even remotely capable of finishing in the top four, and two, that when things really go wrong at Spurs they invariably do so in spectacular and calamitous fashion.

Bruno Lage’s impressive Wolves side are now just two points behind Tottenham in the Premier League table but in truth, they did not require anything special to claim three points. Instead, they were gifted two opening goals that bordered on slapstick.

As Tottenham’s top-four bid suffered a damaging blow, it would have done so to the tune of laughter to those other sides in contention for the Champions League places.

Burnley 0 - 1 Liverpool

Newcastle have just completed their win over Aston Villa. It’s five games unbeaten now for Eddie Howe’s men and they’ve won the last three to take them out of the bottom three and give them a four point cushion in 17th.

Burnley have two games in hand on the Magpies but have to win both of them if they want to close that seven point gap.

Burnley 0 - 1 Liverpool

That defeat means Burnley could end the day seven points away from safety. Newcastle are currently winning at home to Aston Villa but there is a big chunk of stoppage time to play and the game is still going on.

Liverpool have cut the gap on Man City back to nine points. They remain second and are keeping the pressure on the Premier League champions.

Full-time: Burnley 0 - 1 Liverpool

90+3 mins: Fabinho’s fourth goal of the season for Liverpool is enough to give Jurgen Klopp’s men all three points. It was another decent performance from Sean Dyche’s men but they couldn’t score.

That’s been their main problem for the majority of the season and once again it’s come back to haunt them.

Burnley 0 - 1 Liverpool

90 mins: Three minutes of added time to play at Turf Moor. Liverpool have managed the last 10 minutes pretty well. They haven’t let Burnley put together any sort of attack and have penned the home side into their own half.

It looks as though the Reds are going to pick up another three points here.

Burnley 0 - 1 Liverpool

86 mins: Into the last five minutes at Turf Moor. Liverpool win a corner after Diogo Jota sees an effort deflected wide of goal. Andy Robertson heads over to take it. He whips the ball into the box but Connor Roberts it there to work it clear for Burnley.

Burnley 0 - 1 Liverpool

83 mins: Close! Maxwel Cornet is slid into the box by Josh Brownhill and has a great chance to equalise for Burnley. He’s met by Alisson who forces Cornet to drag the ball wide and fire his eventual shot into the side-netting. The offside flag goes up after the shot so it wouldn’t have counted even if Cornet had a scored.

Burnley 0 - 1 Liverpool

80 mins: Chance! Trent Alexander-Arnold drifts inside and makes a run into the middle of the box as Roberto Firmino lifts the all into the area. Alexander-Arnold brings it down and cuts a pass into the six-yard box. The ball strikes Ben Mee and ricochets wide of the back post!
