Neal Maupay blazed over an open goal as wasteful Brighton saw their winless streak stretch to eight Premier League games following a frustrating goalless draw with Leeds.

Recalled top scorer Maupay, back in Albion’s team after three substitute appearances, somehow squandered a golden opportunity with just eight minutes gone on a bitterly-cold evening at the Amex Stadium. Graham Potter’s Seagulls dominated the contest but, despite the best creative efforts of energetic star man Tariq Lamptey, failed to capitalise on a host of chances.

Lively Leandro Trossard and substitute Solly March each rattled the woodwork, while luckless Frenchman Maupay and Jakub Moder wasted further excellent openings. The Sussex stalemate was a sixth draw during Albion’s lengthy run without victory but was sufficient to move them up a place to eighth, above Manchester United. Lacklustre Leeds, who stay fourth bottom, have never won on this ground and rarely looked likely to end that run as their difficult season continued.

Follow reaction to this game and Saturday’s Premier League results below:

Brighton 0 - 0 Leeds

12 mins: As if to try and make up for his earlier miss Maupay receives the ball on the left and cuts inside. He rolls it onto his right foot and shoots from range but it’s an easy stop for Illan Meslier to make and the Leeds goalkeeper scoops up the ball.

Brighton 0 - 0 Leeds

9 mins: Oh no! Brighton should have scored! It’s great work from Lamptey again on the right side as he injects a bit of pace into his run to get to the byline. A cutback into the boc is squared across to Neal Maupay by Moder but Maupay doesn’t get over the top of the ball and spoons it over the crossbar! That’s a shocking miss.

3 mins: Diego Llorente sends the ball up to Jack Harrison who carries it towards the box. Junior Firpo gets forward on the overlap and is fed the ball. He swings a cross towards the back post where Marc Cucurella heads it clear.

Brighton then attack down the right side. Tariq Lamptey is pushing high up the pitch on the wing and he shimmies past Firpo to get to the byline. He pass back into the box is met by Jakub Moder who hits the volley over the crossbar.

Brighton vs Leeds: The standings

This is a big game for both these teams. Brighton are pushing for the European places and could end the day in sixth place if they pick up three points and win by more than two goals.

Leeds meanwhile want to avoid getting drawn into a relegation battle. They have a two-point cushion over Burnley and Norwich and a win tonight will give them a bit more breathing room.

Brighton vs Leeds

Leeds have dropped 10 points from winning positions in the top flight this season, a total exceeded only by Burnley and Newcastle.

The Whites are one of two teams - along with Chelsea - who have yet to concede a Premier League goal from outside the penalty area but the Yorkshire club could lose back-to-back top-flight matches for the first time in 2021-22.
