The Toffees opened the scoring in the first half thanks to a composed penalty from Ndiaye after Veltman handled inside the box. After the break, the Seagulls threw everything at Everton, with Mitoma causing problems down the left-hand side. Rutter enjoyed Brighton's best chance of the game as he pounced on a loose ball just outside the box before sending a thunderous strike at goal, but his effort whistled past the post. Mangala suffered an injury late in the second half, and with Moyes using all his available substitutions, the Toffees were forced to play with 10 men. The Seagulls failed to break them down, and Everton secured an impressive 1-0 victory away from home.
