Bryan Mbeumo’s double and a goal by Yoane Wissa earned Brentford a comfortable 3-1 home win over promoted Southampton in the Premier League, sending the visitors to the bottom of the table.

Mbeumo put the hosts in front just before halftime with a simple low finish, following up on Kevin Schade’s strike which bounced off the post.

He doubled the advantage in the 65th minute with a first-time shot into the bottom corner of the net and Wissa bundled the ball in four minutes later before Southampton pulled a goal back in stoppage time through Yukinari Sugawara.

Brentford moved up to fifth on six points while Southampton prop up the standings without a point.

In a game that had 38 shots, it was no surprise it was goals galore as both sides had their fair share of attempts to try take the points in this game, however, on this occasion, it was Brentford who had luck on their side. With a brace from Mbeumo and a goal from Wissa, the hosts comfortably won this tie. On the other hand, Southampton, who had periods of dominance, stretched their run to three defeats on the bounce at the start of the Premier League season. Brentford were brilliant throughout the game at capitalising on mistakes, and Southampton were certainly the masters of their own downfall. With a few weeks now until their next game, something needs to change quickly in the Saints camp. Despite their 63% possession, 1.31 xG and 18 shots, it was nowhere near enough. Russell Martin and his side have now dropped into the relegation zone with three defeats and five goals conceded. It does not get easier for the Saints though, as their next game is at home against Manchester United after the international break, with Brentford travelling to Manchester City. Thank you for joining us this afternoon, goodbye.
