United have now lost both of their opening Premier League matches under Ten Hag but the club plunged to new depths as a brilliant Brentford side raced into a four-goal lead inside 34 minutes.
Brentford took the lead after only 10 minutes thanks to a mistake by David De Gea, with the United goalkeeper at fault again as Mathias Jensen doubled the lead.
Brentford were 3-0 up within half an hour when Ben Mee bundled the ball home at the far post from a corner and it was 4-0 five minutes later when Ivan Toney teed up Bryan Mbeumo to finish past De Gea.

Knighton came close to buying United in 1989 for £10m before a deal fell through, but spent several years on the Old Trafford board.
And amid continued fan unrest over the Glazers, who continue to leverage their ownership against significant debt and further soured supporter relations during the Super League scandal, Knighton believes it is time to end relieve the “inept” owners of the club.

Cody Gakpo has hinted that PSV securing Champions League football could see him opt against a move to Manchester United.
The 23-year-old Netherlands international is the latest name to be linked with Old Trafford as new manager Erik ten Hag seeks to strengthen his squad in the final weeks of the summer transfer window.
United are yet to open talks with Gakpo or PSV but - as reported by The Independent on Tuesday - their interest in the winger is known.
Gakpo played as PSV’s progressed in the Champions League qualifying rounds with a 3-2 win over Monaco on Tuesday evening. They now face Rangers for a place in the group stages.
“We must first focus on and try to make it to the Champions League,” Gakpo told ESPN after the game when asked about his future.

Erik ten Hag rejects ‘disaster’ claim over Man United’s summer business

“Of course it would be my preference because we could be starting the process earlier [making these signings], that’s quite clear but the season is long and you have to get in the right players.”

When Marnix Kolder was playing in a side managed by Erik ten Hag, his role was fairly uncomplicated. “I was the ‘escape’,” he told The Independent earlier this year. “When the ball was pressured at the back, the long ball from the keeper or the central defender came to me. I don’t know the word in English – a coat stand? The “kapstok”. It’s a typical word in Dutch. The big person they can play the balls to, then you play to the midfielders or to the side.”
