The Carabao Cup finalists head to the Gtech Community Stadium
The 2023/24 Premier League season is under way and you can follow every game and every goal right here with The Independent.
Brentford host Chelsea this afternoon and both teams could do with finding consistency and winning ways, with the Bees down in 16th and on a three-game losing streak, while the Blues are 11th with one win in four in the league.
A late FA Cup win in midweek might boost confidence a little after a Carabao Cup final defeat, but Chelsea have been well-below expectations and Mauricio Pochettino has responded by switching to a 3-5-2 set-up at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Brentford vs Chelsea
Brentford have kept a clean sheet in each of their last three Premier League games against Chelsea – only against Manchester City (2021-2023) and Manchester United (2019-2021) have the Blues failed to score in four consecutive meetings in the competition. Both teams are on the pitch and are ready to get started.
Brentford vs Chelsea
Chelsea make five alterations to the team that beat Leeds 4-2 in the FA Cup. Petrovic’s form means that he is now the Premier League goalkeeper for the Blues, replacing Sanchez. Chilwell captains the side and comes in for Gilchrist at left-back, with Colwill also appearing at centre-back. Chalobah moves out of the defence and into the midfield, meaning Fernandez pushes forward to play just behind Jackson up front. Raheem Sterling, Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke all drop to the bench, with Cole Palmer and Conor Gallagher coming in. Silva and Cucurella return to the squad after a spell on the sidelines, but Christopher Nkunku, Benoit Badiashile and Romeo Lavia are all missing through injury.

Brentford make four changes to the side that lost 4-2 to West Ham in their previous Premier League outing. Ben Mee is out for the rest of the season after fracturing his ankle and is replaced in the defence by Collins. Roerslev is picked on the right side of the midfield instead of Lewis-Potter, with Janelt coming in for Jensen to play as one of the trio at the heart of the pitch. Maupay scored against the Hammers but is out for Wissa, who netted off the bench.

Brentford vs Chelsea
Chelsea are back in Premier League action for the first time in two weeks after playing against Liverpool in the EFL Cup final. It was a chance for Mauricio Pochettino to relinquish some of the pressure after a disappointing season in the top flight and win his first trophy in English football. However, the Blues lost to an injury-hit Reds team in extra time. Chelsea quickly bounced back with a 3-2 win over Leeds United in the fifth round of the FA Cup and will now be looking to push for the European spots in the league. The visitors are in 11th position after a frustrating season that has lacked consistency in their results and performances, but they still have an opportunity to get into the Europa Conference League as they are four points behind seventh-placed Brighton.
Brentford vs Chelsea
Brentford are going through a torrid run of form and have lost 10 of their last 12 fixtures in the Premier League. The Bees’ looked like they were on the up when Ivan Toney returned from an eight-month ban to help Thomas Frank’s men end a five-match losing streak with a 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest, but the hosts have since lost five of their last six outings. As a result, Brentford have dropped from 10th place in the table to 16th, just five points above the relegation zone. Their last loss was one of their worst in the run. The Bees were coming up against a West Ham side without a win in all competitions in 2024 but were beaten 4-2 by the Hammers.
