Despite missing a good chance, Toney was very frustrated in the first period as he wanted more service into the box. Brentford were attacking down the wide areas but struggled to beat the Villa full-backs when attempting a cross.

The first half was evenly contested as both goalkeepers pulled off good saves to keep the scoreline level. Raya was called into action early on to tip Buendia's long shot around the post, while Martinez made a good stop from point-blank range to keep Toney out. The Bees did look more likely to score but Villa were threatening every time they were on the counter-attack.
