Arsenal closed to within six points of Premier League leaders Liverpool as they came from behind to beat Brentford 3-1.

Having been rocked by Bryan Mbeumo’s early goal, Mikel Arteta’s side very nearly went two behind when David Raya let Keane Lewis-Potter’s shot squirm through his fingertips. But the Spanish goalkeeper scrambled superbly to hook the ball off his own line, and barely 60 seconds later, Gabriel Jesus latched on to a rebound to nod home an equaliser.

Arsenal then took control with two goals in three minutes early in the second half, first Mikel Merino capitalising on some chaos from a corner and then Gabriel Martinelli producing a fine finish to convert youngster Ethan Nwaneri’s deflected cross. Three points lift the London club up above Nottingham Forest into second at the halfway stage of their season and start 2025 with an impressive win.

Gabriel Martinelli has gone over to the right, where he played against Ipswich, with Leandro Trossard on the left.

How Brentford would love to nick a goal now, setting up a nervy final 15 minutes or so. They just look a touch short of invention at the moment, unfortunately.

Ch-ch-ch-changes for Arsenal, too. Declan Rice, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Leandro Trossard all started the last outing, and replace Mikel Merino, Riccardo Calafiori, and Ethan Nwaneri, who had a tidy little outing on the right of the front three. Was it enough to earn a consistent starting spot? Perhaps not, but he’s clearly a player of real promise.

Here come those Brentford changes: Kevin Schade, Kim Ji-Soo, Mathias Jensne and Jayden Meghoma are on; Christian Norgaard, Mikkel Damsgaard, Sepp van den Berg, Yoane Wissa are off. I think. Thomas Frank rolling the dice.

Martin Odegaard twice attempts to combine with a teammate on the fringes of the Brentford box, his cute little passes not making it to their intended target due to the intervening stabs of Brentford feet.

The Norwegian’s flick in the next attack is clever, though trickles through to Mark Flekken.

The cavalry are coming for Brentford, four changes seemingly readied. Vitaly Janelt ventures forward trying to create an extra body, and he’s in the box as both Bryan Mbeumo and Mads Roerslev balk at crossing opportunities. Thomas Partey gets a foot in on Mikkel Damsgaard, and an aimless hoist is gathered in comfort by David Raya. Some decent passing in that passage, but Arsenal never looked truly threatened.

A sighting of Ethan Newaneri’s quite considerable ability, the youngster delightfully turning Yehor Yarmolyuk inside out and then weaving alluringly infield. The teenager’s next bit needs work, running aground with teammates waiting for a pass.

Not quite right from Bryan Mbeumo. Off an Arsenal head and cleared.

It appears that some cahnges are on the way, but Brentford play brightly while they wait for reinforcements, Keane Lewis-Potter’s felling by Ethan Nwaneri earning them a free kick in a rather dangerous position.

Wide on the left, 30 yards out. Up come the heavy mob.

A Brentford corner prompts a few words of warning from the referee to Gabriel and a gaggle of contesting players in the Arsenal box. Bryan Mbeumo will take once the pushing and shoving has ceased.

Nifty! Lovely movement as Yoane Wissa peels back towards the penalty spot into space, but Mbeumo’s ball bounces a little too high and Wissa can only generate minimal contact as he tries his best to concoct a shot.

Not far away! A long ball from David Raya springs Gabriel Martinelli, who bides his time before slotting across to Gabriel Jesus. There’s just enough pressure from Sepp van den Berg to prevent a clean finish, with Jesus’s stab trickling wide.
