Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon equalised 14 minutes from time to secure a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday and spoil their hosts’ 125th anniversary celebrations.
Marcus Tavernier put Bournemouth ahead in the first half but Gordon stole in at the back post to steer home a 76th-minute cross from substitute Harvey Barnes to ensure a deserved share of the spoils.
Newcastle advanced to four points from their opening two games of the season. Bournemouth drew their opener at Nottingham Forest.
Bournemouth, hoping for a win to mark their anniversary festivities, had the ball in the net in stoppage time for what looked initially to be a dramatic late winner but Dango Ouattara’s effort was ruled out for handball after a VAR check.

FANTASTIC SAVE! Neto turns the ball wide for a corner after Burn got his head to a Gordon cross. The defender rose high above the Bournemouth defence to direct his effort goalwards from the six-yard box but the goalkeeper got his hand ball to the ball to keep it level.

Semenyo almost gave Bournemouth the lead. The winger rolled the ball towards goal from the edge of the box with his shot going through Hall’s legs. A slight deflection from this sent the ball wide of Pope’s post. Score remains level.

WHAT A STRIKE! Scott almost restored the lead straight away with a venomous strike towards goal giving Pope no chance. However, the Newcastle goalkeeper will be happy to see it flash across his goal and wide.

A cross in from Barnes was met by the shoulder of Joelinton. The ball was diverted goalwards, and Neto got down to make a save and ensure Bournemouth remain in the lead. Had the Brazilian applied his head and power it would surely have nestled in the net. Newcastle are growing more confident.
