Arsenal lost their unbeaten record this season as Bournemouth claimed just their second Premier League victory against the Gunners after William Saliba was sent off.

The centre-back was shown a straight red card for denying an “obvious” goal-scoring opportunity when he brought down Evalison following Leandro Trossard’s back-pass.

It was Arsenal’s third red card this season and Mikel Arteta’s side have now dropped seven points in the games in which they have been reduced to 10 men, following draws against Brighton and Manchester City.

Ryan Christie smashed Bournemouth into the lead with a first-time finish from a clever corner routine, before Justin Kluivert doubled their lead from the penalty spot.

That was self-inflicted, as well, after Jakob Kiwior played a loose ball towards goal and Raya brought down Evalison. It also came moments after Gabriel Martinelli missed a golden opportunity to put the visitors in front.

Arsenal, who were also without both Buakyo Saka and Martin Odegaard in a league game due to injury for the first time since 2021, take on Liverpool at home next week, a game Saliba is now suspended for.

Bournemouth 1-0 Arsenal

75 mins: Ben White was booked for time wasting over a throw in just a few moments before Arsenal fell behind.

Don’t think they will be running the clock down now. Calafiori concedes a corner by touching behind a deep cross.

Ooff. Thomas Partey has his hands all over Marcos Senesi at the back post and the defender goes down. Nothing given .

GOAL! Bournemouth 1-0 Arsenal (CHRISTIE 70’)

MOMENTS AFTER ARSENAL HAD THE CHANCE TO TAKE THE LEAD - THEY ARE BEHIND!

What a set-piece from Bournemouth this is. It’s taken low and at the angle, fired to Christie at the edge of the box.

But what a finish from the substitute. He takes it first time and strikes high into the net. Nothing Raya could do.

A long way back for Arsenal now. Are they heading for a first defeat of the season?

Bournemouth 0-0 Arsenal

69 mins: WHAT A SAVE, WHAT A CHANCE! An error from Kepa on the ball leads to space for Arsenal, and a golden opportunity for Martinelli after he is slipped through.

He looks to take it first time and bend his effort past Kepa, but the goakeeper redeems himself with a big stop to his left. Relief for him.

Bournemouth 0-0 Arsenal

66 mins: Almost an immediate impact from Martinelli, after Calafiori takes a short free kick. The winger bends in a superb ball from out wide and it’s not too far away from a cluster of Arsenal players at the back post.

It goes out for a corner. It’s met by Merino, a long way out, but he can’t do anything with the header.

Bournemouth 0-0 Arsenal

62 mins: Rice plays Semenyo by winning a cheap foul. The Bournemouth winger then gets wound up and picks up a cheap booking for a shove on Trossard.

Bournemouth are making a triple change: on come Luis Sinisterra, Justin Kluivert and Ryan Christie for Ouattara, Tavernier and Scott.

Arsenal make a change themselves. It’s Gabriel Martinelli for Trossard, whose error led to the Saliba red card.

Bournemouth 0-0 Arsenal

58 mins: It’s got quite scrappy, but one senses that’s exactly how Arsenal would want it. Still, there are a couple of nervy moments for Arsenal, especially as Ouattara beats White and puts in a dangerous cross. Calafiori heads away.

Bournemouth 0-0 Arsenal

52 mins: Havertz has been good for Arsenal today, in a general sense rather than in attacking threat, which is now more difficult down to 10 men.

The German wins a corner down the right but Bournemouth head away. Arsenal were again missing Saka’s delivery there.

47 mins: WHAT A CHANCE!

Ah, Bournemouth couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity, or for it to fall to Semenyo! The ball lands to the in-form forward, who pops up back on the right wing, at the back post, but he blazes over!

What a miss. If he hit the target, Raya would have had no chance. Semenyo knew it too.

HALF TIME! Bournemouth 0-0 Arsenal

Was Saliba’s red card the correct decision? Speaking on Sky Sports, former Arsenal forward Theo Walcott said it was a red card.

“It is a clear goalscoring opportunity,” he said. “The decision is probably the right one.”

Jamie Redknapp added: “It does meet all those requirements. As soon as I saw it, I thought ‘William Saliba, you’re in trouble here’.

“Trossard makes a big mistake [with the pass]. After he plays the ball, it is panic. It is absolutely a foul.”
