"Sorry?!"... Pep discovers from reporter Fernandinho is leaving

Manchester City survived a bruising encounter with Atletico Madrid to reach the Champions League semi-finals after a hard-fought goalless draw in the Spanish capital.

Pep Guardiola’s side battled an intimidating atmosphere and a fired-up home side at the Wanda Metropolitano to edge a tense quarter-final courtesy of last week’s equally-draining 1-0 first-leg win.

Atletico finished with 10 men as Felipe – who escaped a booking for a terrible challenge on Phil Foden in the first half – was sent off as home frustrations boiled over in the closing stages.

City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan went close to scoring when he hit the post in the first half but the visitors had to dig deep late on. Atletico upped the tempo in the closing stages and there were some moments of alarm, not least when Antoine Griezmann shot narrowly wide and Angel Correa tested Ederson in stoppage time.

Awaiting Man City are Real Madrid who knocked out Chelsea 5-4 on aggregate after a fantastic match at the Santiago Bernabeu last night.

All the action as it happened from Atletico vs Man City in the Champions League quarter-finals:

Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City

Half-time: That’s half-time. It has been a controlled 45 minutes from Manchester City without them being their flowing best.

Atletico have offered next to nothing after a relatively fast start made it look like they were going to come and attack tonight. They haven’t and 0-0 at the break is a symbol of that.

45+3 mins: Three minutes of stoppage time for the injury to Foden.

Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City

45 mins: Felix turns Rodri and tries to get away but loses out. The referee gives a free-kick to Atletico and the home side immediately surround the official because they want a yellow card. Not great to see.

It’s been a tranquil half of football which has been typified by Atletico’s aggression.

44 mins: City probe once more and Mahrez has another go at beating Lodi down the line, drawing a corner from the Atletico defender.

It’s swung in and a number of bodies go down but it’s Oblak who makes contact with the ball to punch clear.

42 mins: Mahrez does well to leave Lodi on the floor with his quick feet. He tries to cut in and shoot but there are three Atletico players in front of him and he can’t find a way past the first.

Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City

40 mins: I hate to say it, but this is put-you-to-sleep football at the moment. Every now and again Manchester City look a little threatening, but for the most part it is City controlling the game without wanting to overcommit. The poor quality of the match is largely down to Atletico, though.

Cancelo finds Foden in behind but he can’t work an angle and ends up having to run 40 yards away from the goal before playing a pass.

38 mins: Griezmann with a poor challenge - yet another from an Atletico Madrid player. He leaves one on Cancelo and the Portuguese defender is dumbfounded that there isn’t a booking.

De Bruyne comes away with the ball in the middle of the park and feeds Cancelo. He chops back inside onto his right foot and fires an audacious shot well over the top.

36 mins: Half a chance for the Spanish champions. Llorente is found at the back post and he plays it back to Kondogbia who tries his luck from 25 yards out but it’s comfortable for Ederson.

A little better from Atletico. They committed four men into the box. A rare sight.

Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City

34 mins: Atletico Madrid are now a lot deeper than they were in the opening 15 minutes. It’s as if those two good chances for City have shaken the hosts up. They realise if they push up then they will be punished.

Simeone has to take a chance at some point, though.

32 mins: City drive forward again. De Bruyne slides Foden in on the left of the penalty area and his low cross is begging to be tapped home but Reinildo manages to put it behind for a corner with Mahrez closing in.

The visitors are turning the screw.
