"Sorry?!"... Pep discovers from reporter Fernandinho is leaving

Manchester City survived a bruising encounter with Atletico Madrid to reach the Champions League semi-finals after a hard-fought goalless draw in the Spanish capital.

Pep Guardiola’s side battled an intimidating atmosphere and a fired-up home side at the Wanda Metropolitano to edge a tense quarter-final courtesy of last week’s equally-draining 1-0 first-leg win.

Atletico finished with 10 men as Felipe – who escaped a booking for a terrible challenge on Phil Foden in the first half – was sent off as home frustrations boiled over in the closing stages.

City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan went close to scoring when he hit the post in the first half but the visitors had to dig deep late on. Atletico upped the tempo in the closing stages and there were some moments of alarm, not least when Antoine Griezmann shot narrowly wide and Angel Correa tested Ederson in stoppage time.

Awaiting Man City are Real Madrid who knocked out Chelsea 5-4 on aggregate after a fantastic match at the Santiago Bernabeu last night.

All the action as it happened from Atletico vs Man City in the Champions League quarter-finals:

Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City

71 mins: Walker is going to continue for now but he is definitely limping.

Atletico come forward and that’s a chance! Felix begins the move as he nutmegs one City player and lays it to Koke. It comes to Llorente who sets it back into the path of De Paul but his curling effort drifts just wide.

69 mins: Walker has got to his feet but he looks to be in an awful lot of pain.

Meanwhile, Atletico are making THREE changes. Yannick Carrasco is on for Griezmann, Rodrigo de Paul is on for Koke, and Angel Correa on for Lodi.

Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City

67 mins: Lodi leaves one in on Walker when the England international clears the ball away.

At a second glance there wasn’t actually much in it, but Walker has stayed down. Think he may have felt something in his back.

65 mins: First substitution of the game. Raheem Sterling comes on for Kevin de Bruyne.

Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City

65 mins: Silva momentarily looks like he’s started an attack deep inside the Atletico half when he nicks the ball away from Kondogbia. But no, the referee blows for a foul. Very soft.

Llorente tries a long diagonal towards Felix but Walker chests back to Ederson.

Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City

64 mins: When Manchester City get the ball they don’t know what to do with it. It goes from Cancelo to Laporte to Stones to Walker and then back again.

It’s not up to them to commit to trying to score. But will they rue not trying to put the tie to bed?

Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City

62 mins: The pitch opens up for Koke and he looks to loop a ball over the top for Felix but it’s safely into the arms of Ederson.

Simeone is gesticulating wildly on the sidelines. He senses that this is the time.

Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City

60 mins: Ederson looks to try and take the sting out of the Atletico players’ momentum as he waits to play a pass for a good 10 seconds. But it’s straight back to the hosts as City go long with their build-up play.

This is a really testing time for the English champions.

58 mins: The crowd sense something could be happening for their side here now. They are swarming the City players like bees.

Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City

57 mins: SO CLOSE FOR ATLETICO! That’s the closest they’ve come in the entire tie.

Llorente drifts inside and plays it to Felix on the edge of the area. The Portuguese forward lays it off to Griezmann and the World Cup winner tries his luck with a dipping shot from 20 yards out which dips inches wide of Ederson’s right-hand post.

Warning signs for Manchester City.
