"Sorry?!"... Pep discovers from reporter Fernandinho is leaving

Manchester City survived a bruising encounter with Atletico Madrid to reach the Champions League semi-finals after a hard-fought goalless draw in the Spanish capital.

Pep Guardiola’s side battled an intimidating atmosphere and a fired-up home side at the Wanda Metropolitano to edge a tense quarter-final courtesy of last week’s equally-draining 1-0 first-leg win.

Atletico finished with 10 men as Felipe – who escaped a booking for a terrible challenge on Phil Foden in the first half – was sent off as home frustrations boiled over in the closing stages.

City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan went close to scoring when he hit the post in the first half but the visitors had to dig deep late on. Atletico upped the tempo in the closing stages and there were some moments of alarm, not least when Antoine Griezmann shot narrowly wide and Angel Correa tested Ederson in stoppage time.

Awaiting Man City are Real Madrid who knocked out Chelsea 5-4 on aggregate after a fantastic match at the Santiago Bernabeu last night.

All the action as it happened from Atletico vs Man City in the Champions League quarter-finals:

Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City

90+5 mins: Atletico have the ball and are trying to find a way to conjure up one last attack with the 10 men they still have on the field.

It’s a chaotic atmosphere now. Is there a twist in the tale?

90+ mins: Now we’re being told there is nine minutes of stoppage time? Confusion around the stadium, but the game carries on.

Now Riyad Mahrez is booked for taking an age with the free-kick.

90+3 mins: Amongst all that there was three minutes of stoppage time added. We have already played all of that but of course it will have to go on as it was marred by the ugly scenes.

Fernandinho is then chopped down. It’s gotten very ugly.

Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City

90 mins: RED CARD! But Felipe is off! He has to make the long walk back to the dressing room for a second yellow card. That poor challenge on Foden has seen him be dismissed. Can’t have any complaints.

Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City

90 mins: Savic goes in the book. That would mean the referee has said that he saw what Savic did and doesn’t deem it to be a red card.

Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City

89 mins: ANOTHER HUGE CHANCE! Carrasco finds himself in behind the defence and he pulls it across but it’s just behind Suarez and ends up bouncing away! How did that not go in?

Oh and now it’s chaos! Felipe has left a boot in on Foden and Savic storms over in an incredibly aggressive manner. Did he headbutt a City player?

There’s a huge melee and VAR are looking at a possible red card.

88 mins: Is there one last opportunity for the hosts?

Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City

87 mins: OH SO CLOSE! A great ball over the top finds Correa. He chests it down but the shot which comes in from Cunha is blocked sensationally by Stones!

Then the resulting corner is flapped at by Ederson and Savic can’t quite hook it into an empty net!

Chances go begging for Atletico. They won’t get many more of them.

Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City

85 mins: Rodri goes in the book for a late challenge. Kondogbia then reacts after being caught in the face by the referee. That’s taking ‘appeal for everything’ a little too far.

Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City

84 mins: De Paul picks the ball up and suddenly it’s three-on-three. He finds Suarez who is up against Stones but the Uruguayan fails to keep the ball under control and City snuff out the danger.
