Atletico Madrid needed a penalty shootout to edge past Inter Milan and reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League after an exciting last-16 clash ended 2-2 on aggregate.

Jan Oblak saved two penalties and Lautaro Martinez blasted his effort over the bar to send Atletico through 3-2 in the shootout after the match finished 2-1 to the Spanish side after extra time.

Inter opened the scoring in the 33rd minute through Federico Dimarco but Atletico hit back two minutes later with a goal from Antoine Griezmann and Memphis Depay’s goal three minutes from time sent the tie to extra time.

Both teams had chances to win it in extra time but in the end it was Diego Simeone’s side who held their nerve and last season’s beaten finalists exited the competition.

Aletico join an impressive list of teams in the quarter-final draw, including defending champions Manchester City, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.

Arsenal and Barcelona also booked their place this, while the final spot was taken by Borussia Dortmund as Jadon Sancho scored in their 2-0 win over PSV Eindhoven.

90+3 mins: WHAT A MISS! That should have been it for Atletico! It’s superb from Griezmann, taking the ball on the right and then finding Riquelme with a clever ball across the face. But Riquelme then blazes his effort over the bar!

90 mins: Incredible noise! It rises again as it almost breaks to Correa in the box, before Inter are able to thrash clear!

How about those misses from Thuram and Barrela for Inter? They could have killed off the tie, but now Atletico are level.

DEPAY STRIKES THIS TIME! Incredible! Depay has made some impact! And this is a lovely, lovely finish! Atletico work it well on the left and then Depay comes alive in the middle! In one swift movement, he turns inside the box and fires past Sommer into the bottom corner!

And then, on the break, Barella is sent through by Martinez. It’s another golden chance to end the tie, but he takes it too wide and can’t finish either side of Oblak!
