Losing to Atalanta at Anfield a ‘low point’ for Liverpool, Klopps says

Liverpool require one more European comeback under Jurgen Klopp as the Reds travel to Atalanta looking to keep their Europa League hopes alive.

Klopp’s side were favourites to reach the Dublin final on May 22 and provide a fitting farewell for the German manager, but Atalanta ripped up the script as they stunned Anfield with a 3-0 victory in last week’s quarter-final first leg.

Liverpool have overturned a 3-0 defeat under Klopp before, famously against Barcelona and Lionel Messi in the Champions League in 2019, but that was at Anfield. But Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace means the Reds are without a win in three games. Follow all the action below plus get the latest odds and tips right here:

The teams are in the tunnel once more. Are we about to see another Liverpool comeback in Europe?

Plenty of subs warming up at half-time for Liverpool including Harvey Elliott, Wataru Endo and Darwin Nunez, but doesn’t look as though they’ll be coming on just yet.

Second half on the way.

Another Liverpool goal before the hour mark would make this tie very interesting indeed.

“A penalty all day long and Salah was the coolest player in the stadium,” says Peter Crouch on TNT Sports.

He also felt it should have been a red card for Hien for that handball which stopped Diaz running into the box.

Liverpool needing even more attacking movement and chances than they’ve fashioned so far - Salah should have scored a second, but they’ve not had lots more from open play just yet.

Two minutes added on. Gakpo does well to win possession again and take a quick throw - he has been much-improved over the last few games.

Konate has to produce a good piece of defending shortly before the whistle goes.

Half time and Liverpool are not quite halfway to where they want to be, but they are in a reasonable spot on the night so far, a goal to the good - but still trailing 3-1 on aggregate.

Salah’s turn to feed a pass through to Diaz who would be racing through into the box - but Hien leans in and very deliberately handles. Booking for the defender, booking also for Diaz for asking for a card for the Atalanta man.

From the free-kick which is central and 35 yards out, Alexander-Arnold goes for goal but it’s straight into the wall.

Trent Alexander-Arnold escapes twice. First he loses the ball and Scamacca can race through at Alisson - but the keeper reacts quickly and tackles the ball away to safety.

Then the right-back is deeper than the rest of his line and very nearly plays on Koopmeiners, who rattles his shot into the bottom corner - but the offside flag is indeed up and it won’t count.

38’ - Atalanta 0-1 Liverpool (agg 3-1)

Gakpo lofts a brilliant pass over the defence and Salah races through to lob the keeper...and gets it horribly wrong! Bounces wide of goal, well wide in fact. That should be easy for a forward of his quality - a big chance gone for the Reds.

30’ - Atalanta 0-1 Liverpool (agg 3-1)

Scamacca rolls a shot across the face of goal and wide - not a danger this time but Liverpool have let him in behind the centre-backs a couple of times now.

Musso rushes out of goal to clear and only sends it to Van Dijk, but the centre-back scuffs his attempted long-range half-volley.

Gakpo, Diaz and Salah then spark a counter-attack and almost sneak through, but for a last-ditch Hien challenge.
