Newcastle United got themselves back to winning ways with a professional and, at times, dominant display at Villa Park.
A match billed to be a close affair was anything but in the first 45 minutes as Newcastle strode forward, slipped into dangerous areas and put the hosts on the back foot.
Despite feeling restricted from open play, Eddie Howe’s men utilised set pieces to great effect with the first two goals coming from corners.
The first found Fabian Schar near the front post and he turned the ball past Emi Martinez to open the scoring. The second was flicked out to Anthony Gordon whose long-ranged effort struck the crossbar and rebounded back to Schar for a tap-in.
From there, Newcastle added a third after the half-time break through a slick counter-attack that saw Alex Moreno’s attempted clearance find the back of the net.
Ollie Watkins pulled a goal back for Aston Villa – his 50th in the Premier League – and ended his goal drought but it wasn’t enough for Unai Emery’s men to mount a comeback.

71 mins: A pass over the top sees Leon Bailey nip in behind Dan Burn and bring the ball under control. He slides a pass into the box where Ollie Watkins gets ahead of Fabian Schar to turn it past Martin Dubravka!
That strike is Watkins’ 50th Premier League goal.

69 mins: A nice turn on the halfway line from Leon Bailey gets him past Dan Burn and Villa sweep up the pitch. The ball is slipped into the path of Matty Cash who decides to shoot as Ollie Watkins is offside.
He forces a fingertip save out of the goalkeeper who flicks the ball wide of the far post.

66 mins: Close! John McGinn puts the ball out wide to Jacob Ramsey who feeds a nice pass into the box for Ollie Watkins. The forward shoots and drills a low effort at Martin Drubravka who manages to keep it out.
The Newcastle goalkeeper is still fighting off the knock from Watkins earlier and needs a bit more treatment here.

The danger for Aston Villa was always getting caught on the counter-attack. Matty Cash is caught in possession and Anthony Gordon threads the ball down the line for Miguel Almiron.
Almiron delivers it across the box where Jacob Murphy pokes it towards goal. Alex Moreno tries to clear it but can only turn the ball into his own net.

Villa look the play out from the back but they’re put under pressure over on their left wing and Newcastle force the ball out for a throw in.

Aston Villa get the ball rolling for the second half. Villa’s last Premier League home defeat came last February and they won’t want that record to slip tonight.
