'We really had them' - Arteta laments mistakes in defeat to title rivals Man City

Arsenal twice battled back from behind as stoppage time goals from Emiliano Martinez and Gabriel Martinelli helped them to a hard-fought victory at Aston Villa to reignite into their Premier League title bid.

Martinez, a former Arsenal goalkeeper, could do nothing as Jorginho’s strike cannoned off the crossbar and struck the back of his head to settle a thrilling contest 4-2 in favour of the Gunners.

Ollie Watkins and Philippe Coutinho sent home side ahead on two occasions, only for Bukayo Saka and Oleksandr Zinchenko to equalise for Arsenal and keep them in the contest.

The Gunners’ winless run looked set to continue before Martinez inadvertently helped out his old side and substitute Martinelli tapped into an empty net after the goalkeeper went up for a late corner.

There’s talent and skill in Newcastle’s team. All the players will want to impress and earn a spot in the Carabao Cup final team next week.

Miguel Almiron, Allan Saint-Maximin, and Alexander Isak will all be hoping to score in the second half. If Newcastle score next they could get something from this game despite being down to 10-men.

Liverpool’s defending hasn’t been great so far.

Loris Karius could start Carabao Cup final amid Newcastle goalkeeper crisis

Loris Karius could make his Newcastle United debut in the Carabao Cup final after first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope picked up a red card in the Premier League.

Pope was sent off for handling outside his area in Newcastle’s match with Liverpool, meaning he will be suspended for the final at Wembley against Manchester United next weekend.

Second-choice goalkeeper Martin Dubravka played for Manchester United in the competition’s earlier rounds while on loan at Old Trafford, so he is cup-tied and cannot play for another club.

It leaves Newcastle manager Eddie Howe with a choice of Karius or fellow back-up option Mark Gillespie.

Half-time: Newcastle 0-2 Liverpool

45+4 mins: That was a 45 minutes that could not have gone much worse for Newcastle. After starting well and looking the most likely team to open the scoring Trent Alexander-Arnold and Darwin Nunez combined to cut the home side in half and opening the scoring

A second Liverpool goal quickly followed as Cody Gakpo double his tally for the Reds before Nick Pope succumbed to a moment of madess and got himself sent off.

Still, it’s not all bleak for Eddie Howe’s men. Allan Saint-Maximin and Dan Burn have both come close to scoring but they’ll need to get the next goal if they hope to achieve a remarkable comeback.
