Arsenal booked their place in the Europa League knockout stages with a 1-0 win over PSV

Arsenal continued their perfect form in Europe this season while extending their winning run to eight matches in all competitions as Granit Xhaka struck the winner in a 1-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven in the Europa League.

The hosts dominated the first half but could not test Walter Benitez in the PSV goal, with the sides locked at 0-0 at the interval. Arsenal eventually broke the deadlock with 20 minutes to go, Xhaka finishing with aplomb from just inside the PSV box, with the midfielder’s goal securing Arsenal’s place in the knockout stages.

And the result moves Arsenal five points clear of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s PSV in Group A, ahead of their return match against the Dutch side next Thursday where they can secure top spot with at least a draw. Before then, Mikel Arteta’s side will visit Southampton in the Premier League.

15 minutes to go in the first half and Arsenal look comfortable. Saka tricks his way in between two defenders but can’t pick out Fabio Vieira in the six-yard box.

27 mins: Close! Xavi Simons receives the ball in the middle of the pitch before rolling away from a defender and driving towards the ‘D’.

He’s about to get closed down so has a shy and lifts his strike over the crossbar without troubling Matt Turner in Arsenal’s goal.

21 mins: Chance! Nketiah and Tierney work the ball nicely between them on the left side of the pitch and look to be searching for a way down the wing before sending it inside to Gabriel Jesus.

He spins towards goal and hits a snapshot from outside the box, narrowly missing out as the effort flies wide of the nearest post.

18 mins: Phillips Mwene finds a bit of space to the right of Arsenal’s penalty area and runs into it before delivering PSV’s first cross into the Arsenal box. Rob Holding leaps ahead of Guus Til and heads the ball clear.

The Gunners then work their way to the other side of the pitch with some quick passing before Albert Sambi Lokonga lets fly from 25-yeards out and fails to find the target.

He storms through the middle of the pitch before feeding an aerial pass over to Cody Gakpo on the left. Gakpo looks to take on Tomiyasu but decides against it and sends the ball backwards.

The Gunners come again with Jesus played into the box. He’s got his back to goal though and decides to lay it off to Granit Xhaka who drills a low effort from the front edge of the box and pulls the shot wide of the far post.
