Arsenal vs Liverpool LIVE: Premier League result and final score as Saka wins huge five-goal thriller
Arsenal 3-2 Liverpool: Saka’s late penalty moves Gunners top after visitors had twice equalised
Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League table as Bukayo Saka’s late penalty earned them a vital win over Liverpool, whose struggles continued.
Arsenal made the perfect start as they took the lead after just 58 seconds, with Gabriel Martinelli finishing their first attack following a clever pass from Martin Odegaard.
But Liverpool responded well and were the better side as they found the equaliser through Darwin Nunez, only for Jurgen Klopp’s side to concede on the counter-attack on the stroke of half time as Bukayo Saka finished off a move at the back post.
Roberto Firmino’s excellent finish moved Liverpool level once again but Saka’s late penalty - awarded for a foul on Gabriel Jesus and after some chaotic defending - sealed a huge win as Mikel Arteta’s side hung on for a statement victory at the Emirates.
Reaction from Arsenal vs Liverpool below, with Everton vs Manchester United to follow:
GOAL! Everton 1-2 Manchester United
44 min: Cristiano Ronaldo scores his 700th club goal! Casemiro wins the ball in midfield from Iwobi and fires a pass into Ronaldo, and the rest was almost inevitable. The striker takes a couple of touches as he steadies himself before firing low past Jordan Pickford.
Everton 1-1 Manchester United
42 min: Huge chance for Casemiro to score his first Premier League goal. He ghosts into the box and Rashford picks out the Brazilian with a floated cross to the near post, but somehow Casemiro misses the target with his header.
Everton 1-1 Manchester United
41 min: Cristiano Ronaldo gets his first real sight of goal, shifting inside from the right on to his left foot, but his shot from outside the box is scuffed and tame, perhaps showing a little rust from not playing too much so far this season.
Everton 1-1 Manchester United
37 min: Goal... but no goal. United break forwards and after a bit of pinball in the box, Bruno Fernandes fires a shot into the goal, but it’s brought back for an offside in the build-up against Ronaldo. It was avoidable if the striker had just let the ball run for Bruno in the first place, which clearly frustrated the passer Rashford, but there we are.
Everton 1-1 Manchester United
35 min: United are the team applying the pressure as this first half rumbles on, but they are struggling to create anything clear-cut at present. Antony and Rashford have switched wings, without much effect.
Everton 1-1 Manchester United
32 min: Bruno Fernandes tries an unnecessary Cryuff-turn in the box when he could have just crossed the ball with his left foot, and a grumpy Ronaldo flails his arms.
Everton 1-1 Manchester United
29 min: Ronaldo, of course, is one goal away from 700 career goals. He spurned a few good chances to get to the landmark number in midweek – can he do it tonight? He has a little over an hour.
Everton 1-1 Manchester United
27 min: Now then – Cristiano Ronaldo is stripping off his outer layers and tying up his laces. Anthony Martial could have picked up a knock, and it seems he can’t continue.
Everton 1-1 Manchester United
25 min: Mykolenko is hobbling a little after landing awkwardly on his left foot, but seems OK to continue for now.
Everton 1-1 Manchester United
22 min: A crucial intervention – Pickford does well to smother at Martial’s feet as the forward wriggled away from a couple of defenders inside the six-yard box. The visitors looks sharp and dangerous right now.
