“We have to earn the right to win,” says Mikel Arteta

Arsenal’s young guns were once again firing on all cylinders as Bukayo Saka’s strike and Gabriel Martinelli’s brace helped down Everton to send Mikel Arteta’s side five points clear at the Premier League summit.

No other players under the age of 22 have scored more than five Premier League goals this season but both Saka and Martinelli reached double-figures with first-half strikes in a comfortable 4-0 victory.

Captain Martin Odegaard added a third before Martinelli tapped in to put the gloss on the win and leave Arsenal in a strong position as they pursue a first title in 19 years.

This was Arsenal’s game in hand, the original match called off following the death of the Queen, and they went into the contest having lost to the struggling Toffees last month. That was Sean Dyche’s first game in charge of Everton and things appeared to be on the up, but this loss leaves the visitors inside the relegation zone.

Reaction from Mikel Arteta

“I am delighted with the win and the way we played after the first 25 minutes. We had some difficulties at the start. They are difficult to play against.

“Once we scored the first goal, the game unlocked. We needed a magic moment and Bukayo produced that. After that we grew and deserved to win the game.

“With the way they play, direct, second balls, a small lead isn’t enough. We played really well in the second half and could have scored more. I am delighted when I see the team play the way we want to.

“This league is a different story [no easy games]. We had big proof of that at Goodison. They made it difficult for Liverpool to. I’m really happy with the maturity and quality we showed.”

Full-time: Arsenal 4-0 Everton

90+2 mins: There it is. Arsenal have hammered Everton at the Emirates Stadium and move five points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

They’ve won their game in hand on Manchester City and have kept destiny in their own hands. If they win every league match until the end of the season the title is theirs.

That’s not an easy task but it’ll be one Mikel Arteta’s men will believe is possible.

Arsenal 4-0 Everton

83 mins: Less than 10 minutes to play at the Emirates Stadium and the Everton fans have pretty much left. The Arsenal supporters are chanting ‘You’re going down, you’re going down’ and at the minute that is a definite possibility for Sean Dyche’s team.
