Arsenal 4-0 Everton: The Gunners extended their lead atop the Premier League with a crushing win

“We have to earn the right to win,” says Mikel Arteta

Arsenal’s young guns were once again firing on all cylinders as Bukayo Saka’s strike and Gabriel Martinelli’s brace helped down Everton to send Mikel Arteta’s side five points clear at the Premier League summit.

No other players under the age of 22 have scored more than five Premier League goals this season but both Saka and Martinelli reached double-figures with first-half strikes in a comfortable 4-0 victory.

Captain Martin Odegaard added a third before Martinelli tapped in to put the gloss on the win and leave Arsenal in a strong position as they pursue a first title in 19 years.

This was Arsenal’s game in hand, the original match called off following the death of the Queen, and they went into the contest having lost to the struggling Toffees last month. That was Sean Dyche’s first game in charge of Everton and things appeared to be on the up, but this loss leaves the visitors inside the relegation zone.

Martinelli is one shy of 10 Premier League goals, and could become the third Brazilian to reach double figures in a single campaign while aged 21 or under, emulating Gabriel Jesus in 2017/18 and Richarlison in 2018/19.

Mikel Arteta says he empathises with Graham Potter as he battles to save his job at Stamford Bridge – warning the Chelsea head coach not to let negativity “destroy his life”.

The Blues sit 10th in the Premier League after losing to Tottenham on Sunday and are now 26 points adrift of Arteta’s table-topping Arsenal.

Potter has won just nine of the 26 games he has managed across all competitions since replacing Thomas Tuchel in September. The former Brighton boss revealed ahead of the Spurs defeat that he and his children has received death threats.

Sean Dyche must learn a new trick to solve an old Everton problem

It was in the build-up to a game against Arsenal when Sean Dyche showed Dominic Calvert-Lewin a reel of his goals. He urged the striker to get in the box, between the width of the posts and on the end of crosses. Calvert-Lewin responded with five attempts before half-time.

Not Wednesday’s game against Arsenal, admittedly. Calvert-Lewin is out injured, as he has been for three-quarters of Dyche’s reign and much of Frank Lampard’s. There is no timescale for his return which, given his fitness record since scoring 21 goals for Carlo Ancelotti in 2020/21, may be both depressing and sensible. Predictions of his return can appear optimistic amid seemingly endless absences.

Take out Calvert-Lewin and Everton go into the rematch of Dyche’s debut as the lowest scorers in the Premier League and with the weakest available strike force. They are the only team without a player with at least four league goals this season and one of their pair on three, Anthony Gordon, is now on Newcastle’s books. Specialist strikers have delivered just two. Both goals under Dyche have come from defenders: a freakishly brilliant effort from Seamus Coleman and a set-piece header from James Tarkowski.
