Arteta refuses to admit Arsenal are title contenders

Mikel Arteta will hope to continue Arsenal’s stellar form as they welcome Bodo/Glimt to the Emirates stadium tonight. The Gunners were triumphant in the north London derby at the weekend leaving them top of the Premier League table ahead of their clash with Liverpool on Sunday.

Arsenal are unbeaten in the Europa League this term but have only played one game – a 2-1 victory over FC Zurich - thanks to their match versus PSV Eindhoven being postponed due to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Their opponents this evening, Bodo/Glimt, are also yet to lose having picked up one win and one draw from their opening two fixtures. That means that the winner of tonight’s clash will finish the matchday top of Group A.

Arteta is aware of the hectic schedule facing his players and says he will not hesitate to rotate his squad so it will be interesting to see how strong a line-up he chooses tonight. The Gunners boss will no doubt have one eye on the Liverpool game this weekend, but he will also want to secure Europa League qualification as soon as possible.

Omonia vs Manchester United

Omonoia are facing English opposition for a fifth time in Uefa competition. Their first such encounter came against Arsenal in the 1994/95 Uefa Cup Winners’ Cup, with the Cypriot outfit beaten 6-1 on aggregate by the Gunners.

Will they do better against Manchester United this evening?

Neil Lennon backed to give Omonia edge against Man Utd

Omonia forward Loizos Loizou has backed boss Neil Lennon to give the Cypriot side the edge in Thursday’s Europa League tie against Manchester United.

The 19-year-old reckons Lennon’s experience will prove crucial in the clash with Erik ten Hag’s side, when Omonia will be looking for their first win in Group E having lost their opening two games to Sheriff and Real Sociedad.

“Yes, he can make it (the difference),” the Cyprus international told the PA news agency. “He always tells us we are not scared of anyone – but we still have to be at our best levels.”

Ten Hag on facing Omonia

Manchester United boss, Erik ten Hag, spoke about what he is expecting to face in tonight’s Europa League tie with Omonia and how he wants his team to play.

“We played a good opponent, they gave us some lessons but we have to face that we didn’t play well on Sunday.” he said reflecting on the loss to Manchester City in the Premier League. “We did that, we took that and then we take the lessons and then we have to do better in the future.

“In Europe, it’s always a different approach, but it’s also always difficult. I played before there, in the stadium against an opponent so the ambience, we have to be ready for that.

“We have to be ready for a team that is well motivated. They play on the front foot. For them, it is the game of their life, so we have to be ready to face that and to play our game and that is one of the lessons from Sunday.”

Manchester United team changes

Erik ten Hag makes two changes to the side that won 2-0 against Sheriff last time out in the Europa League.

Casemiro comes in for just his second Manchester United start after joining from Real Madrid taking Scott McTominay’s role as one of the two holding midfielders alongide Christian Eriksen, whilst at the back, Victor Lindelöf replaces the injured Raphael Varane.

Cristiano Ronaldo starts up front after sitting out the entire Manchester derby in the Premier League last Sunday.

Cristiano Ronaldo ‘p***** off’ not playing at Man Utd, Erik ten Hag admits

Erik ten Hag says Cristiano Ronaldo is happy at Manchester United but understandably “p***** off” when he does not play, like against Manchester City on Sunday.

The summer was dominated by speculation about the 37-year-old’s future after the forward’s frustrations emerged at the way his first season back at Old Trafford unfolded.

Ronaldo received an eye-watering offer from Saudi Arabia, but no Champions League giants made their move for the Portuguese, who missed the pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia due to a family issue.

The forward has been catching up on that missed training time in the opening months of the season and could start his fourth match in all competitions when United take on Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League this evening.

A loud reception for Manchester United

The locals know that their team will be up against it when they take on Manchester United this evening but isn’t going to stop them from celebrating the arrival of one of the biggest club teams in the world.

Is it possible that Omonia can upset Erik ten Hag’s side tonight?

United boss talks Manchester derby defeat

In the build-up to tonight’s game Erik ten Hag was asked to dissect where his team went wrong when they were bullied 6-3 in the Manchester derby by rivals City at the weekend.

"Obviously it was a difficult day. As always we analyse, and we do that tough, the reality," he said. "In tactics sometimes, also to surprise opponents, you have to bring something different in your game, and we will do that also for the future.

"But we can get a lot of confidence about this theory, when you beat Arsenal, you beat Liverpool and now we get a reality check with Manchester City - so we know we have to step up.

"So thank you for the lesson, from Pep [Guardiola - Manchester City manager]. We will take that and we have to understand we have to do things much better."

Group E standings

Manchester United come into tonight’s Europa League match with Omonia sitting second in Group E after two games.

They lost 1-0 to Real Sociedad on the opening matchday thanks to a Brais Mendez penalty just on the hour mark before Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo found the back of the net against Sheriff Tiraspol to give the Red Devils a 2-0 victory last time out.

Sociedad lead the group with six points with Erik ten Hag’s men just behind on three. Sheriff also have three and tonight’s opponents, Omonia, are yet to get off the mark.

Manchester United may not end the week at the top of the table - though that is a possibility if Sheriff beat Sociedad - but three points will put them in a strong position at the halfway point of the group stages.
