Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Newcastle marked their return to the Champions League after a two-decade absence with a hard-fought 0-0 draw with AC Milan at San Siro on Tuesday, as the Serie A club spurned numerous opportunities in the Group F opener.

Milan winger Rafael Leao kept the Newcastle defence busy throughout the contest and had his best opportunity in the 34th minute, but he miscued an elaborate backheel after skipping past two defenders.

He was also wasteful in the second half, firing a header over the bar after Alessandro Florenzi found him with an inch-perfect cross. The visitors’ attacking efforts were limited to counter-attacks and the English side recorded just one shot on target.

The draw could hurt both teams’ prospects in a challenging group, which features Ligue 1 champions Paris St Germain and 1997 winners Borussia Dortmund.

Who are TNT Sports’ Champions League presenters, commentators and pundits?

TNT Sports’ football coverage will be led by four female presenters this season as it seeks to “push the boundaries” of sports broadcasting.

TNT Sports is the new name for the channel formerly known as BT Sport, with Laura Woods confirmed as host of its Champions League coverage alongside Reshmin Chowdhury. Jake Humphrey, who fronted BT’s Champions League coverage last season, stepped back from his role in May.

Lynsey Hipgrave will continue to host live Premier League coverage on TNT Sports, having done so since the start of last season, while Jules Breach has replaced Des Kelly as the broadcaster’s pitchside reporter.

AC Milan vs Newcastle

Not all of Newcastle’s players are Champions League novices: Kieran Trippier, Sandro Tonali, Sven Botman, Bruno Guimarães and Alexander Isak have all played in the competition before.

With 30 appearances to his name, including the 2019 final, former Tottenham and Atlético defender Trippier is by far the most experienced.

Howe ready for ‘proud moment’ as Champions League manager

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe says it will be a "proud moment" when he attends his first Champions League game and leads the Magpies against AC Milan at the San Siro.

The trip to Italy marks a return to Europe’s top competition for Newcastle after 20 years away and a first for Howe since he became a football manager.

"It is a game of football and I think that’s just how we have to approach it," said Howe, "Yes, it’s a special game and we have to be at our best."

Newcastle fan stabbed in Milan ahead of Champions League match

A Newcastle United supporter is in hospital in Milan after being stabbed on Monday night.

Newcastle fans have flocked to Italy to watch their club play against AC Milan in the San Siro on Tuesday, in what will be their first Champions League match for 20 years.

Eddie McKay, 58, was with his son and a friend when they were attacked by a group of men wearing hoodies at around midnight near the centre of the city, before police intervened. He was stabbed in the back and arms after he fell while trying to run away. Photos showed a shirtless man with a Newcastle United tattoo lying on the street in a pool of blood, being treated by medics before being taken away in an ambulance.

Newcastle’s last European match

Newcastle’s last game in Europe was over 10 years ago, when Alan Pardew’s team reached the quarter-finals of the 2012/13 Europa League.

After losing 3-1 to Benfica in Lisbon, a second-half Papiss Cisse goal gave the Magpies hope at St James’ Park, only for Eduardo Salvio’s late strike to earn the Portuguese side a 4-2 aggregate victory.

Can they mark their return to European competition with a victory tonight?

Eddie Howe insists Newcastle’s delayed arrival into Milan ‘no big deal’

Eddie Howe has insisted the weather which delayed Newcastle’s arrival in Italy will not derail their Champions League adventure.

The club’s European mission hardly got off to the most auspicious of starts when, having been given special dispensation to train on Tyneside on Monday morning rather than at the San Siro later in the day, they remained on the ground for more than two hours.

However, speaking at a press conference which finally got under way at around 9pm local time when it had initially been scheduled for 7pm, Howe was adamant preparations for a tough opening encounter with AC Milan would not be hampered as a result.
