Newcastle marked their return to the Champions League after a two-decade absence with a hard-fought 0-0 draw with AC Milan at San Siro on Tuesday, as the Serie A club spurned numerous opportunities in the Group F opener.

Milan winger Rafael Leao kept the Newcastle defence busy throughout the contest and had his best opportunity in the 34th minute, but he miscued an elaborate backheel after skipping past two defenders.

He was also wasteful in the second half, firing a header over the bar after Alessandro Florenzi found him with an inch-perfect cross. The visitors’ attacking efforts were limited to counter-attacks and the English side recorded just one shot on target.

The draw could hurt both teams’ prospects in a challenging group, which features Ligue 1 champions Paris St Germain and 1997 winners Borussia Dortmund.

AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle

54 mins: The tempo of the second half has slowed down as Milan try to get themselves back up to speed. When they inject pace into their play they have the capability to surprise Newcastle who need to remain switched on, especially at the back.

AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle

AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle

48 mins: That’s positive for Newcastle. Anthony Gordon is given the ball and runs out to the left along the front edge of the box.

He lays the ball back to Sandro Tonali who shifts it onto his right foot and looks to curl a shot into the far corner only for his effort to get blocked and booted away.

Newcastle need to take more shots and chances if they’re going to win this one.

Second half! AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle

There’s only one substitution at the break and it comes from AC Milan. The captain, Davide Calabria, is hooked off with Alessandro Florenzi replacing him at right-back.

Newcastle are unchanged as the hosts kick off the second half.

HT AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle

A frustrating first half for Milan who have had less possession but created the better chances by far. Nick Pope has been fantastic in goal for Newcastle who will hope to push further on in the second half.

Half-time! AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle

45 mins: Anthony Gordon holds his ground as Samuel Chukwueze looks to get into the box from the right. He dinks the ball past the Newcastle winger but Dan Burn is on top of him in a flash and boots the ball out of play.

No nonsense defending from the big man. The whistle then goes for half-time. Nothing to separate the two teams thus far.

AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle

43 mins: Dan Burn looks for a cheeky lofted pass down the left wing to feed the ball up to Anthony Gordon but knocks it out of play. He then gives away a free kick for a late tackle and is showing a few signs of nerves.

AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle

40 mins: Davide Calabria is booked for a bit of dissent and nothing sums up Milan’s evening more than the captain getting a yellow card for shouting at the referee in frustration.

They’ve been the better team but haven’t had the clinical edge in front of goal.

AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle

37 mins: Considering that there hasn’t been any goals yet, this match has been a belter so far. AC Milan are rapid on the counter-attack with Newcastle’s backline looking increasingly nervous.

A cross comes across to Leao who nods it into the six-yard box. Giroud attempts a bicycle kick but misses the ball and Samuel Chukwueze’s follow up effort is headed over the crossbar.
