India vs England LIVE: Cricket result and reaction as hosts win after late Hartley resistance
India and England battle in the second Test in Visakhapatnam
England faltered in their bid to chase down what would have been the highest-ever successful fourth-innings run chase in India, as the hosts levelled the series with an 106-run victory.
Zak Crawley got England off to a strong start at the top of the order after they resumed day four on 67 for one, following the wicket of Ben Duckett in the evening session of day three.
However, the wickets began to tumble. It was a case of starts but without big scores, aside from Crawley’s 73, no established England batter got close to a half century, and continued to struggle against the skill and speed of Jasprit Bumrah, who was the pick of the Indian bowlers.
Ollie Pope, who made a match-changing 196 as England overturned a 190-run deficit in the first Test at Hyderabad was out for 23.
One of England’s greatest-ever batters Joe Root was out for 16, and Ben Stokes was the result of a good piece of fielding and was run out for 11.
It would have taken something special, perhaps akin to the miracle of Headingley for England to even get close to the required 399 runs, but as the top order returned to the dressing room, it looked to become an impossible task.

England will not bow down in face of record run chase in second Test against India
England face an almost impossible challenge when they resume day four on 67 for one, still requiring 332 more runs to win the second Test match against India at Vizag, but this is a team that likes a challenge.
The tourists’ task was made that much more difficult when Ben Duckett was out for 28 just before the close of play, with fourth-innings chases notoriously difficult on the subcontinent, and especially in India.
While Yashasvi Jaiswal’s stunning double century spearheaded India’s first innings, it was Shubman Gill’s 104 in the second that helped them establish control of the game. England will likely have to produce something equal to the feat of the two Indian centurions to come close to taking a 2-0 series lead.
England need 332 runs to win
England’s James Anderson talking to TNT Sports, about them not being out of the game: “Yeah, absolutely. We feel well in the game. We got sat down by the coach last night and he said if India get 600 ahead we’re going to try and chase it down, that is exactly what we’re going to do. I thought we stuck to our task really well today. They put on a partnership at one point but I thought the way the spinners kept going and kept toiling was brilliant. We’re in a great position and we’re going to give it a good crack tomorrow.”
Shubman Gill had his say after the day’s play - England need 332 runs to win
Shubman Gill had his say after the day’s play: “I am definitely very pleased but I think I left a bit out there to be honest. We were in a good position and I think we could have scored a few more runs, but overall I think it was a good effort.”
On the reviews at the start of his innings: “The first one that I nicked, I definitely didn’t feel but Shreyas Iyer, at the other end, told me to take the review just in case it was umpire’s call and once I saw the the deflection on the big screen I was pleased.”
On what was going through his mind before his dismissal: “Nothing really. I saw the point fielder go there and I thought on that wicket the reverse sweep was a percentage shot, but maybe not in that situation where there was five or six overs to go until tea. Maybe I should have played through that and got the runs after tea.”
