England put their opening-day defeat against New Zealand firmly behind them when they beat Bangladesh by 137 runs in the Cricket World Cup in Dharamshala.

The defending champions were utterly humbled by the Kiwis in a nine-wicket defeat that left viewers stunned, and even more problematically, dealt a significant blow to the side’s net run rate.

The Himalayan foothills provided a stunning backdrop to the occasion, and despite pre-match discussions being dominated by concerns around the nature of the pitch, it did not have any significant effect on the performance. Speaking to reporters on the eve of the clash, Jos Buttler described the pitch as “poor”, claiming it was different to the one used when he played at the same ground during the IPL, but England emerged victorious and having boosted their net run rate.

The pitch was also a cause for concern when Afghanistan played against Bangladesh there, as Mujeeb Ur Rahman jarred his knee in the sandy turf diving for a ball, and head coach and former England batter Jonathan Trott said players were “unsure” over their footing.

England 164-1 (27) Root 27, Malan 84, Mustafizur 0-43 (7)

Mustafizur is running through the variations here, including a back of the hand slower ball, but Bangladesh are still searching for the second breakthrough.

But Malan is nearing his century.

The Joe Root ramp is out! That was quality, just eased the pressure perfectly to send the ball for six, to bring up the 50 partnership between the two out in the middle.

England 155-1 (26) Root 19, Malan 82, Miraz 0-33 (5)

Malan tries to go big and it skews away to the boundary for a single, not a good sign for England that they have started chasing after the ball a bit here.

In the last over they had 12 runs from 22 deliveries so it’s definitely slowed down since Bairstow was out, but there’s still a lot of wickets in hand.

No boundaries for 20 balls.

England 149-1 (25) Root 17, Malan 78, Mustafizur 0-33 (6)

Mustafizur has dropped his pace a bit this over and it seems to be working, both of them have struggled to get the ball away and just two from the over.

Sonia Twigg10 October 2023 07:59

England 146-1 (24) Root 16, Malan 76, Miraz 0-26 (4)

It’s calmed down a bit and the England batters are just knocking the ball around for singles, four from that over and three from the one before.

Sonia Twigg10 October 2023 07:55

England 143-1 (23) Root 14, Malan 75, Mustafizur 0-30 (5)

Joe Root pulled out of that at the last minute. But Mustafizur fell over as he tried to pull out and does not look comfortable as he limps away.

After receiving some treatment he seems okay to continue.

Despite the slightly injury it was a tight over, with just the three runs from it.

Sonia Twigg10 October 2023 07:51

England 140-1 (22), Root 12, Malan 74, Shakib 1-31 (7)

The crowd is building, England’s innings is building and there’s another five from the over.

Sonia Twigg10 October 2023 07:43

England 135-1 (21) Root 11, Malan 70, Miraz 0-23 (3)

That was maybe the best shot of the day so far from Joe Root, flawless technique and execution, a lofted drive straight over the bowlers head and a joy to watch.

But the next one was almost chipped straight back to the bowler and only just went over their head, I wonder if that stuck in the surface a little bit but he’s got lucky there!

Sonia Twigg10 October 2023 07:39

England 128-1 (20) Root 5, Malan 69, Shakib 1-27 (6)

Hesitant fielding again from Bangladesh allows Malan to score his 11th four of the match.

After 20 overs England have a solid platform and they can now look to accelerate, but there is still a long way to go in this innings, never mind the match with 30 overs left.

Sonia Twigg10 October 2023 07:36

England 123-1 (19) Root 4 Malan 65, Taskin 0-16 (3)

The wicket has seen Taskin return to the attack as Root starts his innings here.

Another boundary and the runs just keep flowing for England.

Sonia Twigg10 October 2023 07:33

Englnad 116-1 (18) Malan 61, Root 1, Shakib 1-22 (5)

Joe Root strides out to the crease, after his exceptional innings against New Zealand, when no one else even managed a half century.

He gets off the mark quickly with a single.
