England put their opening-day defeat against New Zealand firmly behind them when they beat Bangladesh by 137 runs in the Cricket World Cup in Dharamshala.
The defending champions were utterly humbled by the Kiwis in a nine-wicket defeat that left viewers stunned, and even more problematically, dealt a significant blow to the side’s net run rate.
The Himalayan foothills provided a stunning backdrop to the occasion, and despite pre-match discussions being dominated by concerns around the nature of the pitch, it did not have any significant effect on the performance. Speaking to reporters on the eve of the clash, Jos Buttler described the pitch as “poor”, claiming it was different to the one used when he played at the same ground during the IPL, but England emerged victorious and having boosted their net run rate.
The pitch was also a cause for concern when Afghanistan played against Bangladesh there, as Mujeeb Ur Rahman jarred his knee in the sandy turf diving for a ball, and head coach and former England batter Jonathan Trott said players were “unsure” over their footing.

Dawid Malan and Reece Topley restore faith but England still lacking in one key area
After a nine-wicket humiliation at the hands of New Zealand in the Cricket World Cup opener, England needed a response. They got it in the form of a dominant 137-run victory over Bangladesh in Dharamshala, but the game should have been killed off far earlier.
Having been put in to bat, England set the ideal platform. Jonny Bairstow hit 52 and Dawid Malan played expertly from the outset en route to a match-winning 140 from 107. Joe Root, who had been the one bright spark against New Zealand, shone again with 82 from 68.
But the cracks appeared once the top order had been dispatched. England were 296 for two in the 40th over, and with the prospect of 10 more to come, former captain Eoin Morgan spoke positively with the expectation that the side could reach 400 for the first time in World Cups. Then the wickets started to tumble.
From 296 for two, England slid consistently to 362 for nine in the final over, relying for a second successive match on the last pair to get them over the line and avoid being bowled out. Ultimately it did not affect the result, but against a higher-ranked side, it could prove the difference.

Jos Buttler was concerned by the “poor” outfield at the Dharamshala cricket stadium ahead of England’s second Cricket World Cup match against Bangladesh on Tuesday and insisted it was different to when he played there during the Indian Premier League.
England will be looking to bounce back from their dismal hammering at the hands of New Zealand in the tournament’s opening match in Ahmedabad, where the defending champions were beaten by nine wickets.
The HPCA Stadium has one of the most beautiful settings, nestled in the Himalayan foothills, and is visually stunning, but it was the scene of a potentially nasty injury earlier in the tournament. Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman dived for a ball on Saturday against Bangladesh and his knee got stuck in the turf, spraying soil into the air.

“It’s a step in the right direction after New Zealand, which didn’t go to plan. It’s nice to play with a similar blueprint. Afghanistan in Delhi is likely to be more like their conditions than ours.
“If you’re going about it in the right way, when you’ve got talented players in the changing room, hopefully you’re on the right end of results. If you’re on the front foot, you can have an advantage straight away.
“The beauty of this World Cup is that different pitches will pose different challenges. There might be a different line-up in Delhi. It’s a squad effort. Everyone wants to play. When we are left out, it is how you respond. Getting those early wickets makes you feel like you belong again.”

“I think you’re always looking for the perfect performance, the turnover from 30-40 we scored about 100 runs. That 30-40 period was very smart. There’s not many times you come off and don’t think there’s many areas to improve which is great.

“Reece Topley was great today coming in and got big early wickets in the powerplay.”

“It was colder weather than the last game, you could even see the snow. That could have helped our bowlers, but we didn’t start well enough. If you give them a sniff, they will always come hard.
“We had a good plan, but we couldn’t execute. The ball swung nicely for five or six overs, but we couldn’t land the ball often enough.
“They could have scored 380 or 390, but we restricted them well. 330 we might have fancied our chances, but we needed a good start and didn’t get that.
“It’s a long tournament and we can’t put our heads down. We have to move on and think all of the positives we have been doing, focus on one game at a time.”
