Ashley McKenzie describes how he won judo gold medal at the Commonwealth Games

A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

Why do English athletes sing ‘Jerusalem’ and not ‘God Save The Queen’?

As the Commonwealth Games kicks off in Birmingham, English spectators may be left wondering about that state of the national anthem.

Athletes lining up to compete across 22 different sports will sing the popular hymn “Jerusalem“ rather than “God Save The Queen“ before they enter the fray.

While the latter remains the national anthem for the UK, England itself has no set song and indecision reigns over what should be sung before major international sporting events.

Questions in Parliament have yielded no definite answer so, at present, sports are free to choose whether “Jerusalem”, “God Save The Queen” or “Land of Hope and Glory” is used to set the mood.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Taylor-Brown’s post race thoughts

Georgia Taylor-Brown explained how she felt her triathlon race went as she claimed England’s second medal of the Commonwealth Games taking silver behind Bermuda’s Flora Duffy.

“Really hard, the swim start was odd. We didn’t know what was happening, me and [gold medal winner] Flora [Duffy] felt a bit mugged off. It was a bit chaotic.” she told the BBC.

“Flora said she was going to go on the bike and I went with her, although I am not sure I did her much good and I was a bit flat on the run, I just didn’t have the legs.

“Considering how I felt before the race, I am just happy with a silver medal. It’s quite muggy and sticky, they are tough conditions and the course is so hard on the run.

“But the crowd was incredible, it gave me goose bumps. It’s special, but I am bored of coming home second to Flora, I was a bit gutted I couldn’t copy [England men’s gold-medal winner] Alex Yee and get gold but I am happy with silver today.

“I am enjoying every minute of this year.”

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Reaction from Beth Potter

Scotland’s bronze medallist in the women’s triathlon, Beth Potter, spoke to the BBC after the race saying:

“I am buzzing, just happy to get Scotland a medal. I have been working on my bike this year and it is paying off. I put a lot of work in this winter and glad to be reaping the rewards.

“It was a real target to get a medal this year and just glad I could do that. I got to the front in the swim and thought ‘I am just going to go’.”

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Triathlon

Bermuda’s Flora Duffy takes the gold medal in the women’s triathlon! Georgia Taylor-Brown adds a silver medal to England’s tally following Alex Yee’s earlier gold.

Taylor-Brown matched the Olympic champion stroke-for-stroke in the water, pedal-to-pedal on the bike but Duffy was too good during the run and comes out on top.

Beth Potter takes bronze for Scotland. Brilliant run from her too.

The gap is growing between Flora Duffy and Georgia Taylor-Brown. It’s up to seven seconds now and the English women isn’t looking very comfortable out there.
