A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

England have got off to a winning start in the Men’s Wheelchair 3x3 Basketball. They took on South Africa and beat them 17-2.

England win bronze!

They’ve taken on Wales in the women’s 4000m team pursuit. The Welsh bombed out of the gate and opened up a lead of almost a second but the English quartert kept their heads.

Josie Knight put in a long stint at the head of the four before Laura Kenny took over to lead them home.

As Wales floundered, England grew in confidence and won the bronze with a lead of over a second.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Para Track

Scotland’s Aileen McGlynn - who has won Paralympic, world and European golds in her career but not a Commonwealth gold - needs to win this next race against Australia’s Jessica Gallagher.

The Scot starts well and eases in front but Gallagher responds, moving to the outside and nipping in front of her at the line!

Australia take gold in the women’s tandem B sprint final with Scotland and McGlynn settling for silver.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Para Track

Scotland’s Neil Fachie takes the gold medal!

He needed to break the Commonwealth Games record that the Welsh pair just set. Into the last lap he was one-hundreth of a second behind but upped the tempo and finished his run in under a minute!

The Commonwealth champion defends his title in the men’s tandem 1000m time trial.

Scotland take gold, Wales’ James Ball takes silver with England’s Steve Bate bronze.

Ball and Rotherham take the lead! They blitz the 1000m in a little over a minute to record a new Commonwealth Games record and take top spot.

One more rider to go with Wales’ Ball taking silver at the least. He’s currently in the gold medal position.

That ride was two seconds quicker than England’s Bate and Latham’s.

The Men’s Tandem B 1000m time trial final is underway at the velodrome.

This event has a visually-impaired rider and sighted pilot riding together on a tandem in a race against the clock over 1000m. Each bike takes turns to compete with the fastest finish time the winner.

England’s Steve Bate and Chris Latham go fastest around the track! The English pair were the fifth of seven duos to go which guarantees Bate at least a bronze medal.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Women’s Hockey

Wales are facing Canada in a very close match in the women’s hockey.

The big moment came in the first quarter after Canada goalkeeper Chloe Walton is penalised for obstruction on the goal line and Wales are awarded a penalty stroke.

But from the stroke Sian French’s flick is poor and Walton easily saves.
