Ashley McKenzie describes how he won judo gold medal at the Commonwealth Games

A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

Sophie Unwin receives apology but will still not be given a Commonwealth Games bronze medal

England para-cyclist Sophie Unwin has received an apology from the Commonwealth Games but will still not receive a bronze medal for finishing third in Friday’s women’s tandem B sprint.

Unwin was left in tears after she and pilot Georgia Holt beat Scotland’s former Paralympic runner Libby Clegg, piloted by Jenny Holl, only to learn they would not receive a medal under competition rules because only four teams had taken part.

The race had been billed as a bronze medal race, and Unwin initially appeared on official results as a medal winner.

The pair tried to stand behind the podium ceremony with an England flag before being moved by a member of security staff.

Later, they borrowed bronze medals from the women’s team pursuit squad to have their own unofficial podium photo shoot – actions which earned them and England team manager Keith Reynolds fines of 200 Swiss francs (£172) from cycling’s governing body the UCI.

New Zealand have just beaten South Africa by 13 runs at Edgbaston in the women’s cricket, thanks largely to Suzie Bates’ 91 runs off 64 deliveries. With the ball, captain Sophie Devine starred with figures of 2-23 to restrict South Africa’s chase.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Rugby Sevens

We discussed the home nations’ struggles in the rugby sevens a little earlier - typified by the fact that Scotland’s men are the only side to reach the knockout stages.

They face Fiji in the quarter-finals at 8.26pm this evening and here’s what BBC pundit Ugo Monye had to say about their efforts:

“It’s incredible for Scotland’s men. If you want a barometer of how far you have come then why not take on the Olympic champions [Fiji].

“Their journey so far has been remarkable and they will certainly be up for it. It’s a hit to nothing - all the pressure and expectation will be on Fiji. Wales showed they can really get at this Fiji side in the second half when they tire.”

Here’s the full line-up of knockout games this evening

Women’s semi-finals

New Zealand vs Australia - 7.42pm; Fiji vs Canada - 8.04pm

Men’s quarter-finals

Fiji vs Scotland - 8.26pm; South Africa vs Canada - 8.48pm; New Zealand vs Kenya - 9.10pm; Australia vs Samoa - 9.32pm

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Netball

England 19-9 Malawi

A powerful, impressive opening quarter from England and they deservedly have a 10-goal lead. Eleanor Cardwell and Jo Harten in attack have been superb - quick movement, great link-up play and accurate finishing. 90% finishing from the Roses tells its own story

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Netball

England 11-6 Malawi

A solid start by England. Incredibly quick ball movement in attack, while Eleanor Cardwell’s darting runs and power have allowed her to score a number of goals already.

David Weir suffers Commonwealth Games marathon ‘despair’ after puncture

England’s David Weir admitted he only felt despair after losing out on the Commonwealth Games marathon title because of a puncture.

The six-time Paralympic champion suffered the problem with around 10 kilometres to go and was caught by winner Johnboy Smith.

Weir, 43, who only has one Commonwealth gold – the 1500m in 2014 – had a lead of almost three minutes before the issue and eventually finished seventh in the T53/54 event in Birmingham on Saturday.

“I’m feeling despair and I’ve never felt despair in a race before,” he said. “By coincidence, I was talking with my wife the other day and I said that if I had a big lead I could even afford to change a tyre.

“In the end I decided not to carry a spare, I should have gone with my gut instinct. (Before I punctured) I was flying. Where I’ve come from, on a council estate, I don’t give up.”

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Netball

Australia 83-30 Scotland

A valiant effort from Scotland but ultimately Australia’s class told at the NEC Arena. With Jamaica also in Pool A, it will be a tough ask for Scotland to secure a top-two spot they need to reach the semi-finals. Plenty of positives for the Thistles to take from this performance though.

Defending champions England will be in action at 2pm against Malawi - a highly-rated side expected to be a step up for Trinidad & Tobago, who the Roses defeated 74-22 in their opener yesterday. We’ll keep you updated on that one.
