Ashley McKenzie describes how he won judo gold medal at the Commonwealth Games

A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

Chris Murray wins gold!

That’s incredible from the Englishman who creates a new Games record after lifting 325kg from his Snatch (144kg) and Clean & Jerk (181kg) lifts.

The four-time British champion is now the new Commonwealth champion too. What a result!

Josh Kerr: Commonwealth Games stadium an absolute blessing for British athletes

As Jake Wightman tilted back in disbelief, Josh Kerr soon arrived, shaking his teammate from the red-hot Eugene track into a new reality as world 1,500m champion.

A breathtaking dash home from 200m out saw the Scot take down Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen in a tactical masterpiece to snatch gold. Kerr had lined up just four minutes earlier brimming with confidence as his golden sunglasses repelled the glare of the Oregon flood lights and the Tokyo bronze medalist’s look was complete with an impeccably trimmed hair and beard combination.

There was immense belief that Kerr could upgrade the bronze seized in Tokyo a year earlier, but instead he crossed the line barely a second behind Wightman in fifth place (3:30.60), roles reversed from a year earlier when his teammate languished back in 10th. His subsequent actions revealed the character and Team GB’s tight bond.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - More from Adam Peaty

Swimming hero Adam Peaty had more to say about his process and desire to keep winning medals and how he’s felt as though something has been missing for the last couple of years from his performances.

“It’s incredibly difficult to go five years in an Olympic cycle with the pressure of being Olympic champion, and world record holder, while having a baby and moving house.” he told the BBC,

“These are not normal things. It’s not normal for the brain to be going 24/7, 365, because that is what it is, and more.

“Something has gone missing this last two years. I just haven’t felt the spark in it and I think sometimes you can get burnout from the sport that you do love.

“So, it’s like how do we find our spark again for the next two years into Paris. If we go beyond that, then we go beyond that, but if we don’t - happy days.”

In Wales’s bronze medal match against Australia, Charlotte Carey has lost three games to nil in her singles against Jian Fang Lay.

The Australians win the opening three matches in the event to take the victory and the medal.

Wales have to settle for fourth. They gave it a good go but the Aussies were just a class above.
