Ashley McKenzie describes how he won judo gold medal at the Commonwealth Games

A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

Jake Wightman targeting summer hat-trick after being inspired by Lord Coe

New world champion Jake Wightman is targeting a summer hat-trick after being inspired by Lord Coe.

The 28-year-old, who won a shock 1500m title at the World Championships last month, is plotting more success ahead of the start of the athletics at the Commonwealth Games on Tuesday.

Wightman starts his Games campaign on Thursday, ahead of Saturday’s 1500m final, and will compete in the 800m at next month’s Europeans.

World Athletics president Coe, who won two Olympic 1500m titles, believes Wightman could become Britain’s most successful middle distance runner with next year’s World Championships and the 2024 Olympics in Paris to come.

Adam Peaty questions his love for swimming after shock 100m breaststroke defeat

Adam Peaty questioned whether he still loves swimming after responding to his 100m breaststroke heartbreak by easing through his 50m heat at the Commonwealth Games.

The reigning Olympic champion and world record holder finished outside the medal positions in his favoured event, where he had not lost in eight years, in Birmingham last night as fellow countryman James Wilby took a surprise gold.

But after what he admitted was a “devastating night”, Peaty bounced back to finish joint-top in his 50m breaststroke heat alongside South African Michael Houlie.

The three-time Commonwealth champion touched the wall in 27.10 seconds to progress before revealing that he only had a couple of hours sleep following a lot of soul-searching.

Matt Walls ‘pretty banged up’ after terrifying Commonwealth Games crash

English cyclist Matt Walls says he is “pretty banged up” but otherwise okay after his terrifying crash at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday.

The Olympic omnium champion received treatment for more than 40 minutes at the Lee Valley VeloPark before being taken away by ambulance, with spectators also hurt after he and his bike had come over the top of the barriers on the high banking of the corner.

Team England confirmed Walls was “alert and talking” and given immediate medical attention in hospital before the 24-year-old later confirmed he had avoided serious injury.

Laura Kenny rises above her greatest challenges to claim Commonwealth Games gold

Laura Kenny called Commonwealth gold her greatest ever after a year that left her ‘lost’.

The 30-year-old lifted the roof off London’s velodrome with scratch race victory, a magical moment that she felt stacked up against five Olympic titles.

It did so because, as she explained in extraordinary post-race interviews, of a backdrop of a silent, existential struggle with cycling.

Such was the turmoil that her third and final race at these Games could have been her last.

She said: “Honestly, I can’t even tell you how I felt last night. I just lay there with my mum and I thought I just don’t know what to do, I don’t know whether I can even put myself through this.

“It’s just so hard. It is hard enough coming in, Olympics after Olympics and getting yourself ready, without the whole rubbish stuff of your personal life.”

Team GB prospects looking good, says England’s James Guy

Team GB can look forward to improved prospects in the 200m freestyle after England took silver, Scotland bronze and Wales finished fourth at the Commonwealth Games, says James Guy.

“I think you’re right. Generally, across the board, 200m freestyle has been quite a weak event for us. But having 12 lads here, it’s great for the future. Obviously we can’t go forever but it’s nice to see the young guys coming through and pushing us,” he said.

Tom Dean, meanwhile, was delighted he was able to haul in a silver, even if the gold proved just out of reach. “Yeah slightly too much. I gave it a good go. It was a tough double with the 100m freestyle as well. But the Aussies are such a strong team, they showed that at the Worlds. Incredible race to be a part of.”

‘Back a lion into a corner, they’re going to bite’: Adam Peaty on bouncing back

Adam Peaty has wondered whether his enthusiasm for swimming is on the wane but issued a warning to anyone writing him off, saying: “You back a lion into a corner, they’re going to bite.”

Hours after a shock fourth-place finish in the men’s 100 metres breaststroke final at the Commonwealth Games, ending an unbeaten eight-year record in his favourite event, Peaty was back in the pool.

The 27-year-old was joint fastest in the morning heats of the 50m discipline but a semi-final time of 27.03 seconds was two hundredths of a second slower than Australia’s Sam Williamson in the evening.

Peaty is still digesting what happened on Sunday night and while he acknowledged he may have expected too much on his comeback from a broken foot, he openly questioned whether his desire remains the same.

But the triple Olympic champion and world record holder in the 50m and 100m breaststroke said: “You back a lion into a corner, they’re going to bite. I’m backed into a corner now but I’m OK with that.

“It’s just as important in an athlete’s career to have these moments. You think ‘do I want to be here? Do I love the sport as much as I did?’. I don’t know. Those questions, I have to address.”

Silver for England in men’s 4x200m freestyle relay final

Australia take the gold by a distance but there’s a huge fight for the other medal places and it’s left to Tom Dean to take the silver for England. Scotland and Wales have a huge battle for bronze...and Duncan Scott just does enough to land it for Scotland!

And that’s a Commonwealth record for Australia too in this event.

Adam Peaty set for final race at Commonwealth Games

England swimmer Adam Peaty says he has to keep his spirits up by thinking about the bigger picture, after his comments earlier about being “not bothered” whether he won tomorrow’s 50m breaststroke final or not.

The Olympics are of course the main goal, but he’s a fierce competitor and still wants to win.

Abbie Wood set for ‘mental reset’ after latest medal

Abbie Wood took bronze in the women’s 200m medley final and says she’s looking forward to some downtime before the long race toward the Paris 2024 Olympics.

“I feel like this year has been really hard. So many ups and downs and inconsistencies with illness and just trying to get your head together again after coming fourth in an Olympic games. It’s as tough as sport gets. But to also do this in front of my parents is just as good, so I’m really happy with that,” she said to BBC Sport.

“I think I just need a proper break. I feel like I didn’t give myself that after the Olympics. So I’m going to take a month off and then the charge starts for Paris.

“If I want to have a big break it’s got to be now rather than next season. I just need to mentally reset. I’ve realised how, it’s more your brain than your body these days, for me anyway.”

Gold for England! Sarah Davies wins the women’s 71kg category after rocking a 126kg clean and jerk for a total of 229kg.

Very impressive and a Commonwealth Games record in the category with that weight total.
