Ashley McKenzie describes how he won judo gold medal at the Commonwealth Games

A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Lawn bowls

It’s going down to the last bowl!

Sam Tolchard needs to draw one in for a tie or punch the jack through the gap to win. He goes for the draw... but doesn’t land it! The bowl edges too far past Wales’ red ball.

England pick up one but that’s not enough.

Wales win the gold medal! England settle for silver. Wales win 19-18.

Into the final end of the men’s pairs gold medal match at Victoria Park. England trail 19-17 but Wales are bowling first meaning England will have the final bowl.

Can they pick up two to level or even three to win?

How will England go in the women’s heptathlon?

Katarin Johnson-Thompson lost her world title in Oregon after finishing eighth, 533 points behind the medal places and 759 adrift of the British record she set to become world champion three years ago. However, reigning Commonwealth champion says she’ has recovered her hunger for the sport.

“This time I actually feel I’ve got my hunger back, I want to put in the work and get back to where I was. It’ll be motivation for me through the winter.” She said after that defeat.

Holly Mills set a personal best 6260 points in Gotzis in May and claims to be going for Commonwealth gold while Jade O’Dowda is making her major championship debut at the age of 22.

She is ranked second in the Commonwealth this year with her personal best of 6,224 points in Bedford - a performance which included her best distances in the shot put and javelin.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Lawn bowls

It’s tense. It’s very, very tense at Victoria Park.

Jamie Walker and Sam Tolchard’s storming run comes to an end as Wales collect two in the 15th to move back in front. It’s been a bruising time for the Welsh pair of Daniel Salmon and Jarrad Breen but they’re back in control of the match.

Wales lead 18-16.
