Ashley McKenzie describes how he won judo gold medal at the Commonwealth Games

A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

Up on the high bar Marios Georgiou of Cyprus nails his routine. It’s a fantastic attempt but he can’t dislodge Tyson Bull at the top of the tree.

His score of 14.133 is one tenth of a point worse off than the Australians.

Canada’s Emma Spence - who just won bronze on the beam - scores 12.966 for her floor routine to move into second place.

Spence’s compatriot Cassandra Lee can’t catch Ondine Achampong and her score of 12.900 puts her into third.

This a very close final on floor but England are leading the way.

Brilliant from England’s Ondine Achampong.

The 18-year-old already has a silver medal in the all-round competition and puts in a very nice, competent and exciting floor routine with some lovely tumbles.

She’s scored 13.033 and moves into the gold medal place!

Oh no! England’s Joe Fraser is next up on the high bar looking for his fourth gold medal of the games. He starts off his routine nicely but fails to keep hold of the ball when his hands slip and he crashes to the mat!

That’s at least one full point knocked off his score but Fraser manages to complete his routine and ends with a flourishing dismount.

It’s very unfortunate that he fell. He’s going to miss out on the medals.

‘Mixed emotions’ for Liam Pitchford after leading England to table tennis bronze

England table tennis player Liam Pitchford admitted it was difficult to get up on Tuesday morning as he helped the men’s team seal a bronze medal against Nigeria.

England had looked destined for the final, but were narrowly beaten 3-2 by Singapore in Monday’s semi-final.

In a dominant performance the men’s team comfortably beat Nigeria 3-0, with Tom Jarvis and Paul Drinkhall winning their doubles game before Pitchford and Drinkhall won their singles matches.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Women’s hockey

England win! They’ve beaten India and move to the top of Pool A.

India got a goal back right in the closing seconds but this nail-biting match falls the way of England. They’ve played three, won three. One more game to go in the Pool, against Wales, and if England win it they’ll finish top and set up a favourable draw in the next round.
