Ashley McKenzie describes how he won judo gold medal at the Commonwealth Games

A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

But next up on track are the heats of the men’s 1500 metres, which includes Jake Wightman - who is having a special summer:

Rounding up the women’s 200m heats

That gentle finish to her heat cost Elaine Thompson-Herah her spot as fastest qualifier through to the semi-finals, which will matter little to the Jamaican, who remains the big favourite to complete another sprint double.

Favour Ofili of Nigeria was nine one-hundreths of a second quicker, and is fastest into the semis, with Gambia’s Gina Bass, Beth Dobbin of Scotland and Jacinta Beecher completing the top five.

Those three semi-finals are tomorrow evening.

GOLD MEDAL! Grace Brown of Australia wins the women’s time trial!

Victory for Grace Brown! It never really looked in doubt for the Australian, who was quickest at every check and beat the finishing time of Henderson by 33.35 seconds. Last to start, fastest to the finish.

Fourth at the Olympics last year, but Brown now has a richly deserved gold. Henderson takes an excellent silver, with Georgia Williams completing the podium.

Anna Henderson top of time trial standings...so far

A powerful final few kilometres of the women’s time trial from Anna Henderson, and the English rider is comfortably the fastest across the line so far, more than 45 seconds ahead of New Zealand’s Georgia Williams, provisionally second fastest.

Grace Brown of Australia looms as the big threat, though - she’s fastest through the three on-course checks and, barring incident or accident, should see it home for gold.

Elaine Thompson-Herah wins heat five of the women’s 200 metres

Easy as you like. A smooth run from the Jamaican, easing up through the gears to glide away from the field and then changing down to cruise home in an effortless 22.80.

A solid run from Beth Dobbin (Scotland) to take second behind her, just edging out Australia’s Jacinta Beecher.

Elaine Thompson-Herah back on track

100m gold last night - what does Elaine Thompson-Herah have in store for us this morning? The Olympic champion should win the final heat of the women’s 200 metres at a canter...

Grace Brown fastest through first time check in women’s time trial

Things are shaping up rather nicely in the women’s time trial in Wolverhampton, with Grace Brown of Australia, as expected, fastest through the first time check. But it is far from done - pacing will be key on a course of enough length to really test the legs and pacing acumen of the riders, and England’s Anna Henderson is only five seconds back at that first time check. Henderson has had a really promising couple of seasons since joining Jumbo-Visma, beating a strong field to win a quick prologue at the Festival Elsy Jacobs and recording a seventh at the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in the spring.

Becky Storrie of the Isle of Man, a great cycling hotbed, has had an excellent ride, too - she’s just completed the course in the fastest time so far (41:53.49) and was fourth fastest at the first time check. She might just be in the medal mix.

Women’s 200m heats

Back to the athletics track, and the women’s 200m has begun with five heats.

Olympic silver medallist Christine Mbomba, who missed the World Championships due to injury, took the first of them in a time of 23.20 seconds, while India’s Hima Das, more known as a 400m runner, qualified fastest from Heat Two.

Elaine Thompson-Herah runs in Heat Five, which also includes Scotland’s Beth Dobbin.

Jamaica stun Australia to top netball Pool A

It’s all over at the NEC Arena and it’s a quite brilliant victory for Jamaica, fighting back from a six-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter to secure a 57-55 win.

Captain Jhaniele Fowler led the way with 47 goals, and that’s a real statement win for a side that have finished in third at the last two Commonwealth Games.

They will face the loser of New Zealand and England’s Pool B decider in the semi-finals on Saturday.

Lindon Victor wins men’s decathlon 100m

And defending champion Victor proves to be fastest on the track, too, easing through in a time of 10.76, just 0.04 off his season best. Karo Iga (Papua New Guinea) inside him had a brilliant first 50 metres before fading slightly, and the tall Australian Cedric Dubler was able to beat him on the dip. The top two in the 100m are likely to contest gold - good run from Victor.
