This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.

The Independent is trusted by 27 million Americans from across the entire political spectrum every month. Unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock you out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. But quality journalism must still be paid for.

Tyson Fury eased to victory on the occasion of his first fight in Las Vegas as he furthered his reputation as the world's finest heavyweight by stopping Germany's Tom Schwarz in the second round.

Fulfilling a lifelong ambition of finally fighting in the Sin City, at the revered MGM Grand, he showed a destructive edge he has rarely previously demonstrated to justify the significant interest he has generated in the US since his fight with Deontay Wilder.

Fury had perhaps re-established himself as the world's leading heavyweight with December's thrilling draw against the American, when his performance deserved victory, and his reputation grew to such an extent he signed a lucrative contract to fight on ESPN out of the US against an unremarkable opponent.

Concerns persisted that the rounded abilities he traditionally favours over power and strength meant he would win without the sense of drama generated against Wilder and instead effortlessly out-jab Schwarz in the same way he once did Dereck Chisora, but he instead fought to make a statement and succeeded in doing exactly that.

Wearing the US stars and stripes to and in the ring in an obvious attempt to further his growing popularity among Americans, he made a typically fast start to highlight the extent of the challenge the 25-year-old Schwarz faced.

Jimmy Lennon announces the fighters...

Schwarz taps his cheeks with his gloves, he looks composed.

Can he pull an Andy Ruiz Jr? It would arguably be a bigger upset and a second stunner inside two weeks.

TYSON FURY KNOCKS OUT TOM SCHWARZ

What a performance, Fury knocks out Schwarz in the second.

Quick hands stunned Schwarz in the second, dropping him for the first time of his career.

Fury then followed up with hurtful shots, leaving Schwarz bloodied, and forcing the referee to stop the contest.

"It was a great shot, it would have put down anybody," says Fury.

"I put on an extra 12 pounds, I'm back, the return of the mack, bring them all on.

"I came here to have fun. I just want to thank Bob Arum, Top Rank, ESPN.

"Bob will tell you, September 21st or October 5th, and next year we'll make Wilder give me that green belt."

Plenty of praise for Fury after that...

"I got a big man out of there with the left hook," Fury says.

"He caught me with a couple of shots, so fair play to him.

"It was amazing, I hope America enjoyed it. I'm not one of those who take myself too seriously.

"Yes, September 21st or October 5th, I think in New York, then I'll hunt down Wilder.

"I won't look past today, but Bob and Frank will get deals done, then we'll fight Wilder early next year."

Jack Rathborn16 June 2019 05:17

"He brought me back from the brink of defeat, I was gone, down and out, so thanks to Frank," Fury says.

"It's a fairytale story, it goes on and on."

"Let's get somebody ranked in the top five next time, then Wilder next year, for the best prize in the world," said Tyson Fury's Dad John.
