Katie Taylor retained her undisputed lightweight title with a split-decision win against Amanda Serrano on Saturday night, edging a thrilling contest at Madison Square Garden. The pair were the first female fighters to headline at the iconic New York City venue, and their title fight in front of a sold-out crowd lived up to the billing of being the biggest bout in the history of women’s boxing.

Taylor started as the sharper fighter amid a raucous atmosphere, managing her range well and catching her Puerto Rican opponent with several well-timed counter left hooks. Serrano maintained her gameplan of walking down Taylor, however, and in the second round the unified featherweight champion began to find homes for stinging left straights from her southpaw stance. The most dramatic frame of the fight was the fifth, with the women wildly trading punches in the corner as Serrano’s shots began to take greater effect. The 33-year-old and Taylor moved into the centre of the ring, where Serrano’s power and variety of punches had the defending champion in trouble – almost out on her feet.

Neither woman had ever been knocked down ahead of this bout, however, and Taylor was able to draw on reserves of resilience to make it through the round and even win the final few at least. The result was left to the judges, who scored the fight 96-94 to Serrano, 97-93 to Taylor, and 96-93 to Taylor. As such, Taylor remained unbeaten and retained her undisputed lightweight title as the Madison Square Garden crowd erupted with noise.

Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano

Jake Paul and Eddie Hearn have made a $1million bet on this weekend’s bout between their fighters Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor.

YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul is promoting Serrano, who has held titles in seven weight classes, while Matchroom boss Hearn is guiding Taylor, whose undisputed lightweight title is on the line at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.

The women will be the first female fighters to main event at the iconic New York City venue, while their respective seven-figure purses are also historic in women’s boxing. Serrano’s reported $1m purse could even be doubled if Paul, 25, wins his bet that the Puerto Rican will beat Ireland’s Taylor.

“I’ve got a bet for you, Eddie,” Paul said at this week’s pre-fight press conference.

“I’m not having a tattoo,” Hearn joked, referencing a bet between Paul and former UFC champion Tyron Woodley, whom the YouTuber beat twice in 2021.

Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano

Katie Taylor will fight Amanda Serrano in the same Garden ring where the finest boxers in history have left their blood, guts and dreams.

In the steep banks of seats in the sacred big room, 18,000 will raise their flags in a battle of colour between the local Puerto Ricans, the travelling Irish and the curious. It will be impossible to be a neutral in that first rush of emotion that greets the opening bell; the fight will start under a canopy of howling hearts.

It’s possible that this fight, a very modern yet old-fashioned brawl for the undisputed lightweight title, could have only ever ended up in New York City at its holy sporting venue, Madison Square Garden. It feels like a fight from the sport’s black and white days; the quiet Irishman, the local boy, a hostile crowd, a walking priest, the bookies and the captive audience.

This version of my little boxing fairytale has an Irishwoman carrying a Bible and a Puerto Rican from Brooklyn with attitude; they share 64 fights, they share world titles at seven weights and they have now arrived at that tiny piece of boxing promised land, a place where the winner will be the queen, the last woman standing.

Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano

You will struggle to navigate an article about Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano without encountering the words “biggest fight in the history of women’s boxing”, or some variation thereof. They have featured in these very pages and will again before the clash has its conclusion.

There’s good reason for that: the words are the most straightforward, accurate way to sum up this Saturday night’s main event at Madison Square Garden.

The very fact that – for the first time ever – a women’s bout is headlining a card at the iconic New York City venue, one whose history is inextricably intertwined with boxing, marks a momentous development in the women’s side of the sport. In fact, the card has been built around this undisputed title fight.

But the reality is that this contest does not just mark a momentous development for women’s boxing; it transcends that. It represents one of the most significant forward steps in the entire history of the sport.

Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano

Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano will become the first female fighters to ever headline at Madison Square Garden, as they face off with Taylor’s undisputed lightweight title on the line tonight.

The Irishwoman enters this historic bout unbeaten as a professional, with a record of 20-0 and six knockouts to her name. Taylor, 35, is an Olympic gold medal-winner and former super-lightweight champion, but she said this week of this evening’s clash with Serrano: “Saturday night is going to be the best night of my life. Everything is going to pale in comparison to what will happen on Saturday night.”

Meanwhile, Serrano has just one defeat in her 44 professional fights, and the Puerto Rican – who has held titles across seven divisions – is unified featherweight champion. “I am doing this for Latinos,” the 33-year-old said this week. “This is the first time that Puerto Rico will have an undisputed champion.” It is part of the blood, I guess,” retorted Taylor. “My dad was a boxer, my two brothers boxed, my mother was the first female boxing judge in Ireland. So, I feel like I am carrying on her pioneering spirit.”
