Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney shake hands after 'religion' dispute

Ryan Garcia shocked the boxing world by scoring a majority-decision win over Devin Haney on Saturday, dropping the super-lightweight champion four times en route to victory.

Garcia was ineligible to win the WBC belt after missing weight by three pounds on Saturday, and fans had expressed concern for the 25-year-old’s mental health due to his recent behaviour online, but “King Ryan” triumphed in stunning fashion in Brooklyn.

The American hurt his compatriot in the first minute of the fight, landing a clean left hook, and that signature punch caused Haney trouble throughout the bout, putting the “Dream” down in rounds seven and 11. Between those knockdowns, Garcia dropped Haney, 25, with a right hand in round 10, and those moments were enough to seal the victory.

Garcia was far from flawless, however, suffering a point deduction for punching on the break in round seven, and repeatedly turning his back on Haney as the fight progressed. Haney, in typical fashion, also controlled stretches of the bout with his jab, but Garcia’s moments of brilliance were enough to see him win 114-110 and 115-109 on two scorecards, while the other read 112-112.

Re-live updates and results from Haney vs Garcia and the undercard, below.

Round five

Conwell stays on the front foot, fighting behind his jab now. Decent left hook by Gallimore, but he’s moving backwards as he lands it, costing him some power.

Back comes Conwell, switching targets between the head and body, and uppercuts and hooks are starting to get through upstairs now! Gallimore is on unsteady legs!

More accurate, heavy hooks from Conwell, as blood leaks from Gallimore’s nose! The referee has a good look at Gallimore, who makes it to the final bell.

The ref warns Gallimore that he needs to offer more in round six, or else...

Round four

Gallimore’s eye is already being checked. The doctor deems him okay to continue.

Gallimore actually manages to produce his best spell of the fight now, landing a few grazing uppercuts. Conwell might have tired himself out a bit by going for the finish in round three.

But here comes Conwell, landing a good counter cross. And another, which he drives through Gallimore’s guard!

Round three

Electric start to this round by Conwell. A clean uppercut slides through Gallimore’s guard.

Gallimore is sporting blood around his face – in various places – as Conwell switches to body hooks now.

A thudding right hook lands upstairs for Conwell, now a left. He steps back then closes range with a right cross to the mid-section.

Round two

Conwell chases Gallimore and digs a left uppercut to the body. It barely lands above the crotch...! Now he times a counter right cross to the head, before adding a one-two.

This time, Gallimore parries the right cross upstairs. Gallimore wings a left hook to try to deter Conwell, but to no avail; the unbeaten super-welterweight attacks the body again.

Now a beautiful counter right hook by Conwell, who adds a flurry of body and head shots!

Round one

Both men stand orthodox. Gallimore propels a cross at the gloves of Conwell. Now Gallimore fires to the body, before throwing a grazing left hook upstairs.

Conwell looks to arrest Gallimore’s momentum. He lands a big overhand right then two brutal body hooks! A clean one-two gets through to the head, too!

Devin Haney vs Ryan Garcia LIVE

In any case, any credit paid to Garcia is outweighed by concerns for the young American. At this point, it is not about his physical wellbeing – though that could suffer across 12 rounds with Haney, if the fight lasts that long – but rather his mental health.

Garcia has been open about his struggles before. Not long after beating Campbell in 2021, he delayed a planned bout with Javier Fortuna, citing a need to look after his mental health. For all the bravery Garcia has shown in the ring, that might have been his most courageous move so far.

Recently, however, he has raised concerns with erratic behaviour in front of the cameras and alarming comments on social media. These have ranged from the outlandish – such as vouching for the existence of aliens – to the far more serious.

Devin Haney vs Ryan Garcia LIVE

Haney’s story is simple: He has been sublime. Garcia’s journey, however, has been much messier, and now it is getting murky.

First there is the years-long, ongoing feud with his own promoter: the once great, now grating Oscar De La Hoya. And although “King Ryan” shed his tag as an “Instagram boxer” by climbing off the canvas to stop Luke Campbell in 2021, suggestions that he is not an elite talent were perhaps confirmed in his one-sided loss to Gervonta Davis a year ago. After a tense build-up, Garcia was dropped within two rounds and finished within seven, a body shot leaving him beaten and broken, for the first time as a pro.

Still, Garcia rightly received credit for testing himself against a fearsome puncher while at a tender age, and there are those who observe the same merit in Garcia challenging Haney. Others believe that Garcia, who is yet to hold a world title in an era when they are abundant, would have been wiser to fight Rolly Romero for one of Haney’s old belts – and to use that gold as a bargaining chip in negotiations with Haney down the line.

Instead, Garcia stopped Oscar Duarte in a super-lightweight test run in December, and in any case, Haney’s father and coach has revealed a 55-45 per cent purse split in Garcia’s favour. So, Garcia might just have merged bravery with business savvy – a rare combination in boxing.

(Then again, there was nothing savvy about Garcia vowing to pay Haney $500,000 for each pound that he was overweight – with Garcia now owing Haney $1.5m, which Haney says his opponent has honoured.)

Devin Haney vs Ryan Garcia LIVE

There are fears in the boxing community that Ryan Garcia could get badly hurt when he fights Devin Haney this evening. There are fears that he is already hurting.

In Brooklyn tonight, Garcia and Haney will resume a rivalry that dates back to their amateur careers – a time when there was little to separate the Americans as they went 3-3 across six bouts. Yet as they prepare to meet in the professional ranks as 25-year-olds, nine years on from their last tilt, it feels as though they could not be further apart.

Haney has forged ahead of his old, young rival, establishing himself as pound-for-pound one of the best boxers in the world. To some fans of the sport, he is already No 1; regardless, he is on course to occupy that spot some day. In 2022, the “Dream” dismantled George Kambosos Jr on the Australian’s home soil twice, becoming the undisputed lightweight champion with the first of those victories and retaining that status with the second.

His decisive victory over Vasiliy Lomachenko in May was, in fact, disputed, but Haney again proved his class when he sauntered past Regis Prograis in December. With that win, Haney stayed unbeaten and collected the WBC super-lightweight belt, completing his move to the division after vacating his lightweight titles a month prior.
