Over the course of 12 rounds on Saturday night, “GGG” took on an unfortunate new meaning for Gennady Golovkin, as his chances of securing ‘justice’ in his trilogy with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez were rapidly going, going, and then gone at last.
Judging controversies marred the rivals’ first two encounters, in 2017 and 2018, denying Golovkin one if not two victories over Canelo, and the irony on this occasion was that the Kazakh might have finally been on the ‘right’ end of one, had he not left it too late to start firing. But leaving it late was the theme of this bout, which pitted a prime Canelo at 32 against an aged Golovkin at 40, and that factor gave way to a disconcerting tentativeness in GGG, who rallied late but was in truth not worth the 116-112, 115-113, 115-113 scorecards – all of which favoured Canelo, in any case.
September, the T-Mobile Arena, and stupefying scorecards have been staples of this rivalry, with only the division varying this time around as the middleweight foes clashed at super-middleweight, as Canelo put his IBF, WBC, WBA and WBO titles on the line. Rodriguez vs Gonzalez – Round 6
Rodriguez again forces back Gonzalez, refreshing his offence intermittently by switching between body attacks and headshots.
Gonzalez is still primarily hooking to the body of the champion, presumably hoping that the investment will pay off in the later rounds.
Now comes a nice combination up top from Gonzalez, though!

Rodriguez vs Gonzalez – Round 5
More assertive boxing from Rodriguez, while Gonzalez continues to target the body of the American in an attempt to slow down the champion.
Again the pair take turns hammering each other’s ribs. They’re warned to make sure the punches are kept above the belt line.
Rodriguez ends the round with a flurry to the body and head of his challenger, who’s backed up against the ropes!

Rodriguez vs Gonzalez – Round 4
Rodriguez backs up Gonzalez and unloads hooks to the mid-section of the Mexican.
Gonzalez with the same shots in retaliation, before he appeals to the referee, claiming that some of Rodriguez’s offence has strayed below the belt.
The super-flyweights are trading brutal body shots again now! Surely someone is going to wilt?

Rodriguez vs Gonzalez – Round 3
Rodriguez is on the front foot early in the third round, mixing up his offence.
Gonzalez in turn works the body of the champion with heavy hooks.
Slick footwork on display from both fighters as they swiftly swap positions in the centre of the ring.
Effective jab work from Rodriguez, who then catches Gonzalez with a lead southpaw uppercut.

Rodriguez vs Gonzalez – Round 2
An aggressive start to the second round from Gonzalez! Is he going to punch himself out in the early rounds?
He lands a clean right cross but eats a couple of stern counter straights from Rodriguez, who is finding his timing already.
Gonzalez with alternating hooks to the body. Rodriguez lands a grazing uppercut. A while later he connects with another, using tremendous speed to make the shot.
A solid counter left lands for Rodriguez late in the round, but Gonzalez times a piercing jab simultaneously.

Gonzalez whips an uppercut into the sternum of Rodriguez.
Rodriguez with a high guard, slowly coming forward, staying light on his feet. He seems content to let Gonzalez throw the greater volume in this round, while he himself makes reads.
More body shots from Gonzalez. He’s timed a couple more uppercuts nicely since the first. Rodriguez comes back with two tidy southpaw left crosses.
Gonzalez with a gentle right hook then a hard right straight that Rodriguez seems to feel!
