Russian forces have used more than 800 glide bombs in the past week to hit Ukraine, president Volodymyr Zelensky said last night.

Ukraine’s war-time president shared photos of the Russian strikes on the besieged country’s cities of Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, Odesa, Sumy, Kherson, Donetsk and Kharkiv.

“This week alone, Russia has used more than 800 guided aerial bombs against Ukraine. Against our cities and communities, against our people, against everything that makes life normal,” he said on X, formerly Twitter.

He said this after Russia struck Ukraine’s two largest cities yesterday, with missile fragments falling on a suburban Kyiv apartment building and a guided bomb killing one person in Kharkiv. An eight-month-old infant was injured in the bombing in Kharkiv, officials said.

It comes as at least 38 of the bombs, which have been credited with helping Russia regain the initiative on the frontline, reportedly dropped onto Russian territory by accident, according to a leaked internal Russian document.

The document suggested that between April 2023 and April 2024, more than three dozen of the bombs fell from the fighter jets carrying them.

Ukraine dismisses reports on bolstering troops near Belarus

Ukraine‘s border guard has dismissed reports suggesting it was reinforcing its troop deployments along the border with Belarus, saying they amounted to an “information operation” by Minsk with Moscow’s support.

Belarus, a close Russian ally that has provided support for Moscow’s military campaign in Ukraine, said last week that Kyiv was bolstering its forces along the countries’ shared border. The Kremlin on Monday said the report was a cause of concern.

“It is not the first time Belarus offers information about Ukraine presenting a threat and strengthening itself... This is another part of the information operation conducted by Belarus with support by Russia,” border guard spokesman Andriy Demchenko told Ukrainian national TV.

The border area with Belarus remains “threatening” and Ukraine maintains the necessary number of forces there to prevent any provocations, he added.

Zelensky congratulates Hungary on EU presidency

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has congratulated Hungary on its assumption of the rotating presidency of the European Union, despite fears that Budapest’s leadership could spell problems for Kyiv.

In a message on X, formerly Twitter, Mr Zelensky wrote: “I wish [Hungary] effectiveness in promoting our shared European values, goals, and interests. While advancing on its path to the EU, Ukraine is ready to contribute to these efforts and strengthen our Europe.”

Last week, Mr Zelensky and Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban, who has opposed military aid for Ukraine, were seen engrossed in an animated conversation on the sidelines of a summit in Brussels.

Mr Orban, who previously opposed Ukraine’s membership to the EU, is the only European leader to meet with Russian president Vladimir Putin since he launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Ukrainian convicts join the fight against Russia

Ukrainian prisoners have joined the fight against Russia after the laws were changed earlier this year to allow convicts to serve in the armed forces.

In a move intended to bolster the available pool of recruits as Ukraine struggles to match the manpower of Russia, Kyiv says it’s treatment of prisoners will be completely different to the cannon fodder approach employed by Moscow when using its own convicts.

Ukraine says it repelled attacks near villages claimed by Russia

The Ukrainian military has claimed to have repelled Russian attacks near Novooleksandrivka and Spirne in the eastern Donetsk region a day after Russian forces claimed control of the two villages.

The eastern Pokrovsk front, which includes Novooleksandrivka, remained the site of the fiercest fighting, with 42 assaults repelled out of a total of 142 battles over the past day, the military said.

Russia maintained a military presence across the border from Ukraine‘s northern Chernihiv and Sumy regions, the military said, adding that Moscow’s forces were increasing the density of minefields in the area and also conducting sabotage activities.

That section of the border has been closely followed for any sign that Russia plans to open a new front there to pressure Ukraine‘s outnumbered defenders.

Russia launched an assault into the border areas of the northeastern region of Kharkiv in May, opening a new front in 28-month full-scale invasion.

Its forces continued assaults there on Monday, attacking near Vovchansk and Lyptsi, the military said.
