More than a dozen people have been killed after a Russian glide bomb hit a pedestrian street in the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, local officials have reported.

The missile hit some of the city’s industrial infrastructure just before 3.45pm local time while civilians were out in the street.

Images released by local governor Ivan Fedorov showed bodies lying on the street with vehicles smashed and engulfed in flames behind them.

“Thirteen killed in enemy attack on Zaporizhia,” Mr Fedorov wrote. “Russia is a terrorist country.”

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack as “cruel” and carried out in full knowledge that it would maim or kill civilians.

“There is nothing more cruel than launching aerial bombs on a city, knowing that ordinary civilians will suffer,” he wrote.

“Russia must be put under pressure for its terror. The protection of lives in Ukraine must be supported. Only through strength can such a war be ended with a lasting peace.”

Footage shows impact of Russian bombardment of eastern Ukrainian frontline town

Footage released by a Ukrainian brigade has shown the devastating impact of Russia’s monthslong bombardment of the eastern Ukrainian city of Toretsk.

Russian forces entered the city in the Donetsk region in October and have been engaged in fierce street fighting ever since. They have relentlessly bombed the city in a bid to rid it of Ukraine’s defending soldiers.

Fighting intensified further in recent weeks. Reports this week suggested Russian forces had entered the northwest of the city.

Russia captures 0.5% of Ukraine in 2024, claims war tracker

Russian forces captured an additional 0.5 per cent of Ukraine in 12 months of fighting last year, a war tracker has claimed.

Vladimir Putin’s troops slowly advanced through eastern Ukraine last year, capturing the city of Avdiivka in February and marching towards the city of Pokrovsk around 30 miles deeper into the country throughout the remainder of the year. They are now within a few miles of it’s outskirts.

This means that the total territory in Ukraine controlled by Russia amounts to 18.14 per cent.
