A lorry has been driven into crowds in central Stockholm in what police are treating as a terror attack.

A lorry has crashed into a crowd of people in central Stockholm killing at least three people, Swedish police have said.

Armed police rushed to the scene and shots have been fired, Swedish radio reported.

The incident occurred at Ahlens Mall in Drottninggatan, a shopping area of the city, which has been cordoned off.

A witness told Swedish daily paper Aftonbladet: “I went to the main street when a big truck came out of nowhere. I could not see if anyone was driving it but it got out of control. I saw at least two being run over. I ran as fast as I could from there.”

Another witness told the paper they saw hundreds of people “running for their lives” outside the shopping centre.

“A vehicle has injured people on Drottningatan,” police spokeswoman Towe Hagg told Reuters.

Police say they do not believe the man in custody is the driver of the truck but that he was "in the vicinity" of the attack. Officers are refusing to release any further information about the arrest at this stage.

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven has visited the scene of the attack to lay a bunch of flowers in memory of those killed. The death toll currently stands at four, but nine people are seriously injured, including one child.

Speaking to reporters minutes earlier, Mr Löfven urged Swedish people to "take care of each other". Praising those who had opened their homes to people trapped in Stockholm this evening, the Prime Minister called them "the pride of Sweden" and promised: "Together we will all take care of Sweden."

Swedish media sources are now reporting that the man in custody is 39 years old and has expressed sympathy for Isis. This has not been confirmed by police, who are yet to provide any further details on the arrest.

More information has emerged about the strengthened border controls the Swedish government has introduced this evening.

They will apply for at least ten days and could be extended by a further ten. Controls will be in operation for people both leaving and entering the country, including from other EU states/

Police are advising Swedes to always carry a passport or international ID card if travelling abroad.
