The historic vice presidential debate between Mike Pence and Kamala Harris has wrapped up with contentious exchanges over the coronavirus response, the environment, Trump’s taxes, the economy, and foreign policy.
Pence repeatedly went over his allotted time and interrupted Harris on multiple occasions, leading the senator to reprimand him with the words: “Mr Vice President, I am speaking.”
Pence accused Harris of undermining confidence in a Trump coronavirus vaccine, while Harris demanded to know to whom Trump owes money.
Twitter meanwhile was particularly distracted by a large fly that landed on Pence’s head and appeared to stay there for about a minute. There is also speculation that the vice president might be suffering from pink eye.
The VP nominees were face-to-face for the first time in Salt Lake City in what was billed as the most anticipated clash between two running mates in recent memory.
The debate was given approval to go ahead after both candidates returned negative coronavirus tests on Wednesday, and the CDC said Pence was not a "close contact" of Donald Trump.
Biden plan is for a national strategy over contact tracing and administration of a vaccine.
Pence touts progress with vaccine, testing and China travel ban. Accuses Biden campaign of plagiarism and says their plan looks like the Trump-Pence plan.
Harris brings up Bob Woodward revelation that Trump knew of dangers of virus in January.
Tells Pence: “Mr vice president, I’m speaking” when he tries to interrupt her.
Moderator brings up Rose Garden superspreader event and asks Pence how Americans are expected to follow guidelines when the administration does not.
Pence defends event as being outdoors and with testing.
Says they trust the American people.
The American people have sacrificed too much and have not been equipped with the information they need, says Harris.
Would you take the vaccine?
Harris: If the health officials OK’d it. Not if Trump does.
Next segment is on the role of the vice president. Both candidates would be the deputy to the oldest president in American history.
Pence is asked if he and Trump have spoken about the role and his place as next in line to the presidency.
