Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Donald Trump has lashed out at President Joe Biden and California Governor Gavin Newsom over the wildfires currently rampaging through Los Angeles, which have already killed five people, destroyed more than 1,000 structures and forced 150,000 residents to evacuate.

“One of the best and most beautiful parts of the United States of America is burning down to the ground,” the president-elect fumed on Truth Social.

“It’s ashes, and Gavin Newscum should resign. This is all his fault!!!”

In an earlier post on his social media platform, Trump wrote: “The fires in Los Angeles may go down, in dollar amount, as the worst in the History of our Country.

“In many circles, they’re doubting whether insurance companies will even have enough money to pay for this catastrophe.”

Meanwhile, the incoming commander-in-chief’s dreams of using military force to annex Greenland have been denied by the US embassy in Copenhagen and met with ridicule by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has also mocked his plan to rename the Gulf of Mexico.

Trump will be in Washington DC on Thursday for the state funeral of former president Jimmy Carter.

Trump rants at Biden and ‘Newscum’ about LA wildfires — fails to mention those impacted

Donald Trump is using the wildfires ravaging suburban Los Angeles to attack President Joe Biden and California Governor Gavin Newsom — while completely failing to mention those who have lost their homes and businesses, or even that two people lost their lives.

In addition to an earlier post, blaming Newsom for the catastrophe, the president-elect wrote: “As of this moment, Gavin Newscum and his Los Angeles crew have contained exactly ZERO percent of the fire. It is burning at levels that even surpass last night. This is not Government. I can’t wait till January 20th!”

He then followed that with a trademark all-caps tirade: “NO WATER IN THE FIRE HYDRANTS, NO MONEY IN FEMA. THIS IS WHAT JOE BIDEN IS LEAVING ME. THANKS JOE!”

Sarah McBride slams Republicans for attempted trans sports ban

Newly-elected Rep Sarah McBride, the first openly-transgender member of Congress, criticized Republican efforts to restrict transgender youth from competing in women’s sports, saying that she is “mystified that this is a priority”.

Last Friday the House voted on its rules package, which determines how the House of Representatives will conduct itself in terms of procedure, and also outlined a series of legislation considered priority.

At the top of the list is legislation that would change the determination for compliance with Title IX, which prohibits sex-based discrimination in education programs that receive federal dollars.

Eric Garcia reports from Washington, D.C.

The first openly transgender lawmaker exclusively tells The Independent that Republicans’ prioritization of the legislation leaves her “mystified that this is a priority” for the GOP.
