Donald Trump went on a very strange rant about light bulbs

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Donald Trump has lashed out at moves towards his impeachment in a series of angry tweets claiming he has “done more than any president”.

“You don’t impeach presidents for doing a good (great!) job,” he insisted, before accusing his rivals of “treasonous crimes”.

It followed his frequently incoherent speech to Republican members of Congress about the Clean Waters Act, in which he suggested the US was uninhabited until 25 years ago.

“By the way today we have the cleanest air, we have the cleanest water that we’ve ever had in the history of our country,” he said.

Mr Trump then appeared to suggest that the history of the US was merely 25 years long.

“Let’s say the history of our country over the last 25 years, I would say that the first few years they probably had cleaner air and cleaner water because there was nobody here.”

The president was speaking in Baltimore, a city which he attacked repeatedly last summer.

He also celebrated a "historic milestone" when the senate approved his 150th federal judge, and sent out some rogue tweets about vaping.

In other 2020 related news, it looks like Andrew Yang's plan to give ten people a lump sum of monthly payments to prove his "freedom dividend" is a good idea may actually be in hot water -

Donald Trump spent part of his Friday on Twitter (go figure!) celebrating the latest Republican victories in North Carolina during a special election earlier in the week -

Earlier today, the term "Mike Pounce" went viral and was trending on Twitter, after Donald Trump mistakenly referred to his vice president as such.

That's probably not the most important news for you to have in your arsenal today, but it is quite entertaining.

You're welcome.

With Democrats on Thursday having gone pretty hard on gun control, Republicans are circling the wagon and threatening fellow conservatives that their base may be upset if they strike a deal.

Senator Ted Cruz is among those, and urged his colleagues not to strike a deal to require background checks on internet or gun show firearm sales.

"If Republicans abandon the Second Amendment and demoralize millions of Americans who care deeply about Second Amendment rights, that could go a long way to electing a President Elizabeth Warren," Mr Cruz said on Friday morning.

A new report from the Wall Street Journal details a pretty remarkable moment at this year's G7 summit in France, when Donald Trump reportedly asked where his "favorite dictator" is.

"Where's my favorite dictator," Mr Trump said during a gathering of American and Egyptian officials, as he waited for Egyptian president Abdel Fattah Al Sisi at the Hote du Palais.

Witnesses told the Journal that the question was met by a stunned silence, and it was unclear if Mr Sisi was present, or if he heard Mr Trump's remark.

In the fallout from the odd advert posted on ABC during last night's debate, showing Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's face being burned up, people are pretty upset with the network.

#BoycottABC was trending Friday, with folks expressing some stark outrage on the issue.
