Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Support for Donald Trump’s impeachment is soaring according to the polls as it emerges the president recently attempted to pressure Australia’s prime minister Scott Morrison and other foreign leaders into assisting his attorney-general William Barr with an investigation into the origins of Robert Mueller’s Russian election hacking probe.

New details continue to surface about Mr Trump’s now-infamous call with Ukrainian president Volodymr Zelensky of 25 July, the basis for the House Democrats’ inquiry announced last week, including the revelation that secretary of state Mike Pompeo took part in the offending conversation.

The president’s personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, has meanwhile been subpoenaed by the opposition for text messages, phone records and other communications related to the botched attempt to corner the Eastern European nation into pursuing a corruption allegation involving leading 2020 Democrat Joe Biden but laughed off the matter on Fox News: “They seem to forget that I’m a lawyer.”

Apparently, there is a mouse — note: NOT a rat — in the White House press briefing room.

It's causing quite a stir.

Earlier today secretary of State Mike Pompeo sent a letter to House Democrats accusing them of trying to "bully" officials into testifying as a part of their impeachment inquiry.

Here's a copy of that letter:

Former special counsel Robert Mueller has been out of the headlines for ages now — at least in terms of this administration, as we all tend to morosely tweet — but he is apparently doing alright for himself these days.

He has now joined the law firm of WilmerHale, according to the Associated press, where he will focus on crisis management and high-profile investigations.

Earlier today, we heard from a top Republican who said that the whistleblower who brought forward potential wrongdoing must be protected.

Senator Chuck Grassley — a man hardly known as an ally to bleeding heart liberals — said in a statement that protecting the individual is a top priority for the US.

"This person appears to have followed the whistleblower protection laws and ought to be heard and protected," Mr Grassley said.

"We should work to respect whistleblowers' requests for confidentiality. No one should be making judgements or pronouncements without hearing from the whistleblower first and carefully following up on the facts."

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was approached by a woman and some parmesan cheese during his visit in Italy. Apparently, she was led away while urging him to talk to Donald Trump.

I, dear reader, would welcome any such form of protest. Send along your cheese.

Mark Zuckerberg, in audio leaked to the Verge, has threatened to sue the US government if Elizabeth Warren becomes president and makes good on her pledge to break up big tech.

He's not the first big industry player to express fear of a Warren presidency.

Take a look at our report:

Rudy Giuliani has, reportedly**, lawyered up!

He has hired white collar attorney Jon Sale as he faces down a potentially tough time representing the president.

Mr Sale, notably, was fired by Richard Nixon as a part of the so-called bloody Sunday firings.

**We here at The Independent have since confirmed.
