From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Donald Trump’s tumultuous day began with the release of a memo describing a phone call which could end his presidency, and ended with a weary rambling speech characterised by boasts, false claims and self pity.
If the president thought releasing the partial transcript would silence his critics, as he seemed to hope, he could not have been more wrong.
While his supporters claimed the memo exonerated him, his opponents insisted that it was even more damning than they had feared.
The call showed him asking his Ukrainian counterpart to investigate Joe Biden, who could face Mr Trump in next year’s presidential election, immediately after discussing the military aid Kiev needs to protect itself against a Russian-backed insurgency.
They also talked disparagingly about the former US ambassador to Ukraine who was recalled after apparently falling foul of the president’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani. Mr Trump apparently told the Ukrainian president: “Well, she’s going to go through some things.”
After appearing at an awkward media conference with the Ukrainian president himself on the edges of the UN general assembly, Mr Trump addressed the press himself.
In a low-energy performance, he insisted that the accusations against him were a Democrat “hoax” timed to embarrass him in front of the world’s leaders, boasted about his accomplishments, accused Mr Biden and his son of being corrupt and assured a Venezuelan journalist that he was watching developments in her country closely.

Here's my full report on what the official impeachment inquiry could mean for the Trump presidency, and what may come next in this historic political drama:
In a bit lighter of news (since we could all use a breather from time to time), the brother of Fox News host Laura Ingraham has called out his television personality sister for her “monstrous” behaviour after she mocked teen climate activist Greta Thunberg during her latest show.
Curtis Ingraham, who has previously shared disdain over his younger sister’s TV antics, wrote in a tweet on Monday night: “I can no longer apologise for a sibling who I no longer recognise” after the latest airing of The Ingraham Angle.
Ms Ingraham spent a segment of her programme making fun of the 16-year-old activist, who delivered an emotional speech earlier in the day at the United Nations Climate Summit. She compared the young girl to the horror film Children of the Corn, a 1984 movie that tells the story of a group of children living in rural Nebraska who form an evil cult and kill the adults in the town after being manipulated by a supernatural force.
Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are holding a bilateral meeting and speaking with the press right now. Quotes, video and analysis incoming...
Donald Trump is discussing how Ukraine lost Crimea under former President Barack Obama, and calling on other countries to step up increased financial aid as he did during his phone call with the Ukrainian president according to a memorandum the White House released on Wednesday.
"We don't need help, we need support," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told Donald Trump in front of the press, insisting on the US and other European countries to work together to help "stop war".
“Then stop corruption in Ukraine,” Donald Trump told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after he said he wanted to improve the country’s role in a global economy.
“I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be involved … in elections of USA,” Mr Zelensky said when asked by a reporter about the controversy surrounding a phone call between him and Mr Trump.
“Rudy is looking to also find out where the phony Russia witch hunt started … he wants to find out where did this Russia witch hunt that you people perpetrated, really started,” Donald Trump said, adding: “And Rudy’s got every right to”.
Donald Trump is now attacking Hillary Clinton over her emails after a reporter asked if he believed the emails were in Ukraine.
“She does a lot of yoga, huh,” the president said, mocking her over reports some of her emails had to do with personal activities like planning a wedding and taking yoga classes.
"You know there was no pressure," Donald Trump said while discussing the phone call between he and Mr Zelensky.
Donald Trump is now saying Nancy Pelosi has "really lost her way" and "didn't know what I was talking about" yesterday when he says he mentioned guns during a phone call with the US House Speaker yesterday before she announced a formal impeachment inquiry into the president.
