Donald Trump promises to cure cancer

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Scuffles broke out after protesters waving an “Immigrants Built America” banner disrupted Donald Trump’s latest rally, where he continued his racist attacks on congressman Eljiah Cummings, the City of Baltimore, and "the squad".

The demonstrators held up the US president’s speech for nearly four minutes before they were kicked out of the event in Cincinnati, Ohio. But, the moment was only blip in the president's campaign rally where he offered up a flawed understanding of American immigration policy, trashed the idea of an independent judiciary, and slammed California for having homeless people and poverty.

Mr Trump, who appeared to make an obscene gesture as they left, also promised to cure childhood cancer, mocked FBI investigator Robert Mueller and boasted about the trade war with China – despite warnings from one of his former advisors, Gary Cohn, that it is damaging the US economy.

UK opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn has attacked Mr Trump's decision to withdraw from the missile treaty, saying: "This reckless act will heighten the risk of a nuclear arms race".

Cincinnati police have charged a man with assault after he was captured on video punching an anti-Trump protester in the face outside the president's rally on Thursday night.

Fellow protesters had chanted "lock him up" as Dallas Frazier, 29, was taken away by officers.

There were no other arrests related to the rally, according to local media.

America's only black archbishop has accused Donald Trump of "diminishing our national life" with his recent racist attacks on the four female Democrat congresswomen known as "The Squad".

Wilton Gregory became the Catholic leader of Washington in May.

Are Mr Trump's attacks on the four Democrat congresswomen, and Democrat-run cities such as Baltimore and Chicago, part of a grand strategy for the 2020 presidential campaign? Or does he just make it up as he goes along?

During his latest rally he said Baltimore's murder rate was higher than Afghanistan - which would only be true if it ignored deaths due to the ongoing armed conflict in that country.

Nearly three-quarters of Americans believe that speaks off the cuff, while more than half of Republicans believe he carefully considered his comments.

Mr Trump himself has claimed that he has "zero strategy".

Donald Trump's first tweet of Friday targets Democrat Elijah Cummings, referring to reports that the congressman's house in Baltimore was burgled.

The crime is said to have taken place just hours before the president launched his first attack on Mr Cummings on Saturday, saying that his district was "considered the worst in the USA" before going on to describe it as "rodent-infested".

Our developing story on Donald Trump's latest attack on black congressman Elijah Cummings.

Police say the burglary of Mr Cummings' home on Madison Avenue, Baltimore, took place at around 3.40am on Saturday. It is not clear whether any property was stolen.

Another strange episode from the Cincinnati rally involved the crowd turning to applaud a group of black Trump supporters - who were wearing "not racist" t-shirts - as the president gave them a thumbs up.

Donald Trump has spoken to new UK prime minister Boris Johnson about trade, global security and the 5G network, says the White House.

During the phone call on Thursday, the president said that he looked forward to meeting Mr Johnson at the G7 economic summit in France later this month.

The prime minister has to make a decision over whether Chinese tech giant Huawei should be involved in the UK's 5G infrastructure.

Reports of a National Security Council meeting in April suggested that Ms May had decided to allow Huawei to tender for work on “non-core” elements of the network, against opposition from ministers including Gavin Williamson, who was sacked as defence secretary over the leak.

But weeks later, Donald Trump put Huawei on a US “entity list” restricting the export of software and technology to the company by American firms.

While the growth of the US economy has slowed down in recent months, new figures from the Labor Department show a rise in jobs and wages.

The unemployment rate remained at 3.7 per cent for a second straight month, as 164,000 jobs were added to the economy. Average hourly earnings increased 3.2 per cent from a year ago, up from annual gains of 3 per cent in June.

The gross domestic product — the total output of goods and services produced in the United States — grew at a 2.1 per cent annual rate in the April-June quarter, down from a 3.1 per cent in the January-March period.

On Wednesday the Federal Reserve cut interest rates in an attempt to prevent a slowdown.
